Two LOCAL newspapers I contacted with press releases called back and wanted to know if I wanted to place an ad. they would not run my release as news. Some home town right??? ggrrr Am I doing this wrong?

who specifically did you send your press release to? I've spent quite a bit working at newspapers, and it's all about getting the release into the correct hands. Usually the ad people and the news people aren't even on the same floor and they only talk to each other when it's absolutely necessary. Also, are your local stores carrying the book? If not, you've got yourself an uphill battle. |

Pac, When I contacted our paper, I spoke first to the department who does the section regarding book releases each week. Truthfully, they gave me the impression they wanted to say "so what". I then contacted someone in the community section of the paper who seemed really excited and asked a lot of questions over the phone. He asked for a book, etc. I took it to the newspaper office and dropped it off and I don't know what happened from then. I got a two sentence mention at the bottom of the "book review" page. But I've noticed since then that that's really all any local author gets. It seems most of the book reviews and release information is syndicated from other larger papers. I'm going to go through the whole process again soon with "The Butterfly Game" but I think I'll go at it with a lot more knowledge and a whole different attitude. Gloria |

the two local papers have a staff of about 3 people each. they seem to have an elevated sense of self worth or could it be a GREEN streak called jealousy because I did what they only dream of doing? http://www.pacwriter.netfirms.com/ |

I think you might have hit the nail on the head there, Pac. It seems to me that people who want to be "authors" are more hateful and snotty than those who never had such desires. While people who just like to read, don't see a whole lot of difference in publishing companies, it's the book itself that counts, those who write but aren't published look with disdain on any and all publishers but the two or three major ones.
