Hi PAC. Don't forget to send me the e-book and paperback price so I can submit this review to MBR. It is a VERY good book, folks. LAJ
=======================================================================

The Prize is a historical novel of seagoing men in the heyday of frigates, schooners, tall masts and billowing sails. I could almost smell the salt air as I read.

The story begins in the straits of Florida where the Americans and English are blocking the French from landing arms and supplies. The year is 1778. Captain Okes commands the frigate Medusa and takes the French ship Morgador as prize. His choice to captain the prize to Antiqua is young Lieutenant Hadley Anson. As captain, Anson is inexperienced and insecure, but he undertakes this assignment with courage and determination. He gets underway with a nervous and suspicious crew and a certain dread about the voyage. Will he be equal to the task?

With God as his ally, young Anson proves to be a man of mettle and intelligence. He handles each difficult situation, makes every hard decision with honor, quickly earning the respect of his crew. As ship's captain, Anson has strong instincts and a quick mind tempered with compassion. Despite luck, grit, and the grace of God, Anson knows he has only the slimmest chance of reaching Antiqua with the Morgador intact to claim his prize.

Along the way the Morgador encounters dead calm seas, during which they drift off course. And more than one exciting sea battle is fought with the French. After one such battle, he rescues a mysterious, wounded young boy named David, the boy's black guardian, Samson, and a beautiful young girl from Boston, Nancy Sumerford. Compounding Anson's problems are double dealiing captives who are determined to take over his ship. While laid into an island cove for repairs, a hurricane threatens to destroy both ship and supplies.

The Prize is an exciting read, complete with well developed characters and fascinating glimpses into life as it was for sailors then. The sea battles are heart pounding as Anson and his men fight their way to safe port in Antigua to claim their monetary prize. And young Anson's growing interest in the comely Miss Sumerford is cut short by her return to Boston. I suspect a sequel in the offing, and can't wait to read more about the adventures of Hadley Anson and his men. If you like historical novels and sea going sagas, you will enjoy this one.
