I've got a website now besides authorsden. I had no idea what to say on it and whether to do it in third person or first person...decided against first person. I haven't gotten the links done, but it's a start I guess.

You can see it at www.gloriadmarlow.com

Any advice is welcome.

My first and only comment thus far Gloria, is to change the color of your font. Maybe bold it or something. I can barely read it against the black background.
But you've got a great start. I really like the template you've chosen. Works well with the genre you write in.

Hope this helps to start you off.

Good going gal friend. Looks good to me. Just make sure that your guestbook pages and email you page works. And PUT A LINK to you publisher for the Butterfly Game. And a link to you for Flowers for Megan, if you still have any to sell.

Love it. Very dramatic. I will say also that since I am 3/4 blind I had trouble reading the smaller print against the black, but I love the color.
waaaaaaaaaaaaaa. I want my own website too. How did you make yours, Gloria?

Great start Gloria. I like the background, and template, but would suggest changing the welcome flowers to red...as well as the e-mail graphic...and perhaps petals on your navigator elements to the right (maybe green). I'd experement with adding touches of color. It would tend to softed the appearance slightly. Once you play with it a bit, you'll know immediately that you have the right visual balance.

Don't know why, but the pages didn't open when I clicked on the navigator elements on the right.

I enlarged the writing, bolded it and made it a different color, a little less brilliant pink. I don't think I can change the colors of the flowers or petals since it is a template I got from a site that has free graphics. I think that is part of the agreement when you use them...and the little link back thing that links you back to the graphic page.

I haven't linked any pages together yet. Still trying to figure out how to do those. For some reason my computer at home won't let me upload any graphics so I have to do it at work.

Laurel, I had a free geocities site, but for around $7 or $8 a month I was able to get one with just my name as the domain name. I went to a graphics site and found some graphics I liked and did it with those instead of the ones geocities offers. I have others I intend to use on the other pages, I just have to figure out what to put on them.

Gloria,

I'm looking at the site now... All I see is a white background with pink text and image placeholders with no images...?

I also looked at your source code... there are a lot of blank table rows in there... does Geocities give you a template to work from? Just curious. That alone shouldn't be a problem, I was just surprised by the amount of code for what I see on the page. If you want to see what I'm talking about, right click on the page and choose the "view source" option from the menu.

I'm not trying to make it confusing... I just thought I'd point that out :-)

Gloria...looking good! But check out the second paragraph, 4th line, after the word, children. It reads: &nbp; Needs to be deleted. Color gave it that feminine touch.

It looks like Gloria is using the pagebuilder wizard Geocities has...I know when I started one up that way, it tended to add a lot of empty tables and such in there...took me a while to clear it all out...

It seemed to come up fine for me...and the only thing (other than looking forward to seeing the linked pages) I noticed was the   that Bill mentioned...

Thanks everyone, I took out the &nbsp(I think)...don't know where that came from.

It took me all day today just to figure out how to link my guestbook. I linked my publisher and e-mail and I'm working on the Flowers for Megan link.

I've had that happen to me as well from time to time...
and if I search back in my memory bank, I may be able to remember why...
will let you know if it comes back to me...

(I think it comes from copying and pasting certain type formats into others)

Very nice looking site :-)

Yeah, as Todd said, the extra code I'm seeing looks like this...

<td><img></td>

td img src= http://www.geocities.com/clipart/pbi/c.gif height=1 width=1 /td

(The forum doesn't allow code, so I pasted it once as it reads and once without the brackets and stuff)

There is table right off the bat with a whole bunch of those... the image is blank... so it seems you probably don't need all that code :-)

It's lookin' good, Gloria. When you get the chance I'd suggest putting your book covers on the front page. Maybe make an animated gif that cycles through the covers.

Okay, I have no idea how to fix the code. I know what it is, basically, but I'm afraid to mess with it.

Matt, I don't yet have a book cover for The Butterfly Game or Shades of Silence..so those have to wait.

I did do the link for Flowers for Megan and that page is done.

Gloria,

Go to your site, right-click (somewhere on the site), and "view source"...then in the menu bar, click File, Save as (and save it to your hard drive somewhere (personally, I would add .html to the end of the filename)).

Close your other windows, and open the file you just saved (it should be a duplicate of your site (minus any pictures you linked to, if you're currently off-line)).

Then go into Wordpad (or Notepad, if it allows you to), and edit out some of those blank tables (I recommend cutting versus deleting, in case you take something out that you need to put back (you can paste the last line you cut). Save the file, and refresh the window where you have the file opened...it should give you a preview of your changes...

If something gets messed up, then you can start over, and the original site will still be intact. When you finish editing, just use the 'file upload' option at geocities to upload the new edited file...

It came to life sometime overnight and now it's there...

The old site is gone and this will be it's replacement. It's a newborn baby at the moment but it will grow. This is the beginning, not a polished product.

I'd like someone with a warp speed connection (Mine's one step up from a string tied between two tin cans) to log onto my site to see if the music loads okay. When I try it, the music comes in little chunks.

Dennis,

I would log on and tell you, but my puter sound is not working. Sorry..... I have to get this stupid thing in to the shop and get if fixed, but it is so much hassle to unhook and carry it out and then bring it back home and rehook it all up,...... so I just don't have sound. Otherwise, I sure would.

I have DSL and the music plays fine for me -- very smooth (but don't forget to include a way for visitors to turn off the music. I know that's a biggie in webpage design ettiquette). Cool music.

Nice looking site.

I'm on dialup, and once everything is loaded, the music works fine (the music starts and stops while stuff is loading)...

I believe the little white box is somehow connected to the player for the music (Flash Player)...at least that's the stuff that comes up if you right-click on it...wonder if there's a way to make it yellow so you don't see it against the background?

It looks like you and I are at about the same point with our 'appearances' page...or have you just not had time to get all of your upcoming stuff on there?

Everything looks good, and appears to work correctly...
I'll need to remember to add a link for you on my page...

Generally, I hate music on a Web site. I am usually playing my own music when I'm online.

But...your music loaded quickly for me and I absolutely loved it! I would turn mine down to hear yours.

Though I do not like this sort of thing. The flowers and all lol. Go figa eh? It is very well done, nice and professional, no broken links, and everything is where it should be, not clustered up. I enjoyed looking through it though and like the way the pages fade in and out. Good Job, I know I am playing catch up lol. What's "Shade of Silence"?

Josh, thanks. You should have seen how amazed I was when I made the pages fade in and out! There were all kinds of effects, like they could fade into a circle pattern or be wiped away slowly, etc. Pretty cool.

Shades of Silence is my third book. I just finished it and sent it to the publisher. I will putting the synopsis up soon. As well as the teaser for The Butterfly Game.

I am going to visit your site right now.

By the way, welcome. You'll find very good people with very good advice here.

I am trying the whole book thing I like writing, but don't like the situations of a book needing to be done this deadline or that deadline. I am not sure if I want to become a Professional Writer if you would, reason for me going to school for my Associates Degree in Information Technology, and um...4 yrs what's that Masters in Business. Doors will open, beside I never wore a suit before lol. Keep me updated, you got a good head on your shoulder.
