I saw a posting on another forum raising the notion of selling books on eBay...

Not a good idea...

I just visited eBay and browsed the listings for about 750 titles (about 20% 0f the entries) in the mystery/thriller genre. All of these were nearing the end of their auctions. (within 4 hrs.)

There are 50 items on each page and I would say that there were only 4 or 5 bids on any page and I only found two of them that exceeded $10... Most of the bids were on "package deals" of four or more books.

Dennis,
I don't sell books on regular ebay with auctions. But they do have ebay's half.com and I have sold books that way. You can set the price for whatever you want. It is pretty similar to selling your own books through amazon. I have sold more through amazon, but I have sold some on half.com too. It's another option.

Unfortunately, when I calculated up how much I would have to sell my books for on Amazon in order to make a profit (with their fixed AND percentage commissions), it didn't make much sense for me to do so...if I wanted to try and plug my book for $13.95, I'd send them over to PA's online store...

I was going to sign up for PayPal just the other day (so I could sell my book more readily through my website), but was a bit perplexed by some of the items in their 'terms of service' you have to acknowledge before registering...and wasn't sure if I had to sign up for their Premier or Business account, or if I could get by with a Personal...

I had Pay Pal and I, too, found their agreement rather restrictive. For my purposes, their competitor, CCNow, proved better. Of course, the ideal way to sell books online would be to take credit cards via your own merchant account. But doing this is like buying a new car - there is no set price and their sales department sizes you up and charges you accordingly. I would much prefer to have buyers put cash in an envelope and send it to me. Even with losses due to theft, it would still be considerably cheaper than going the MasterCard/Visa route.

Not to mention that a merchant account (at least all that I have had the grace of contacting) charge a minimum monthly maintenance fee of $200. Then you add the percentage of sales on top of that amount...

I have a PayPal Business Account, and I've not ahd any troubles at all. For the amount of transactions that I will actually be handling through there, it would not be worth having my own merchant services. If I did, I think I would do the same thing that all of the ticket master places do...for every charge card accepted, they charge the percentage back to the cardholder. When I bought the tickets for the Uncle Kracker concert, it cost me an extra $40 in processing fees.

Pay Pal doesn't permit selling downloads. Neither does CCNow. What good is the internet if everything ends up going by snail mail?

I use a Paypal Account on my website, this because I am doing everything myself. Self-Publishing, self advertising, self website. Hmm notice a trend lol. So far though I have not sold any books, but I to have been looking through the paypal contract and might take the link down in my website, and look for a better option.
