For some time now I have noticed similarities in events and movies. The one American export that all nations and races seem to partake of are our films. I remember seeing a Movie several years ago where Muslim terroists
had a nuclear bomb aboard an American Airliner in route to DC. On board this plane was an Arab pilot. I think the title was Executive Order. Since 9/11/01 I wondered if those Arab assasins got the idea from that Movie. Just a thought. Are we inadvertently giving terrorist ideas on how to harm us? How many movies have there been where the World Trade Center Towers have been targeted?

I remember fearing during the Iraqi War coverage that the retired general correspondents, in explaining the strategies of our troops in the field would unwittingly help our enemies. Would it be unthinkable that the opposing army strategists could be sitting in their war command rooms with Televisions circling the room tuned to CNN or MSNBC for details on how to defeat American troops. I think in the technology driven modern world we often forget how TV., computers, cell phones, and modes of transportation makes the world a much smaller place.

Trina,

I keep wondering why "someone" doesn't use our media to our advantage. I have a love of westerns. They're just simple morality plays about good vs evil, well mostly. I know in my heart that most Islamic tribalists probably see the world in a similar way.

If someone could alter some great westerns to remove any Christian references (in deference to Islam), then provide a prologue to explain our western expansion history, these would probably be accepted with delight in the more backward Muslim areas of Afghanistan and Iraq. Americans would then seem to be more "like us" than "different from us".

I nominate John Wayne in "Big Jake" as a first one. A very simple story anyone could love. Tough honery old man returns to try to rescue his kidnapped grandson from evildoers. I just know that simple Pakistani tribesmen would identify with both the good guys and the bad guys, and maybe realize that we aren't so different after all. Once upon a time, we were much like they are now.

Movies are an American advantage if they are used properly. We should use them as such.

Later,
Olen A

Actually, the plane into a building thing was done also in book form, via Tom Clancy's Debt of Honor, where in this instance, a Japanese man (I believe, if memory serves, we had just finished a war with Japan in the book) flew a large jumbo jet (747, perhaps? I forget) into Capitol Hill, destroying almost everyone in Congress, and killing the President, thus thrusting Jack Ryan (the MAN, by the way!) into the Presidency.

I can't recall whether the book came out before Executive Order or not...

but as far as people getting ideas from books, I imagine folks all around the world can come up with sadistic and cruel methods to destroy people or things...just a matter of who it is that comes up with those methods, and whose side they happen to be on...

But the thought causes self-censorship, at least with me. I have a plot outline of a terror attack at Churchill Downs by suicidal nutballs with incendiaries. It's an old wooden structure with many updates. Narrow underground tunnels lead to the infield. The panic would cause more death than the fires. I would do it on the day BEFORE the Ky Derby, when they also run races with the feature race called the Ky Oaks. Almost as many people are in the stands (120,000), the infield is full, and it'd be a marginally easier target.

But I'll NEVER write that. I gotta live around here. And if someone DOES do something along that lines...well, I gotta live around here.

I'd hate to give 'em good ideas, but I hate to pass on a good plot device. A bummer!!

In Detroit, we've got an international tunnel that links two countries beneath the Detroit River. Lot's of terrorist possibilities there. And at the northern end of our State is the Soo Locks that hold back Lake Superior which is 27 feet higher than Lake Huron...

Actually, I heard recently that books with plots that could be used by terrorists (I don't know how they find or pick these books out of a lineup) are sent off to the CIA...can't imagine what they do with the info, but it was an interesting thing to hear...

One must ask themselves, then...would you write a mystery where someone killed another person? Technically, someone could use your plot to do the same thing.

Perhaps that would best be asked on the new 'musings' thread?
