Hi everybody! I'm new to the board, so thought I'd introduce myself. Like a lot of other folks here, I have a book, The Burning Hills, published by PA and written under my pen name, Will Garret. But that's not why I'm here. I've lurked for about a month and like the constructive, substantive tone of the conversations, so finally registered.

I freelance for various national trade publications and write historical nonfiction under my real name. Also still give about 50% of my time to my occupational safety consulting firm, The Solutions Group. I'm a member of the Western Writers of America and the current chair of the Brainerd Writers Alliance, a well established regional writers group in central Minnesota. My email is listed in the profile and anyone who is so inclined can take a look at my Western Trails website at www.willgarret.com

There, that's enough about me. I'm anxious to get to know all of you better in the near future, although many of you are folks I recognize. One more thing, if anyone would like a website link at Western Trails, please email with your name, book(s), genre, a brief description, and the url. I will be happy to add it on my "Other Authors" page.

Regards,

Gary

Hi Gary,

Nice to meet you. I'm not certain where Brainerd is but Minnesota is one of my favorite states. We have long time friends in Faribault.

You might have read about me on other threads but I'll repeat the basics. I am a retired Registered Nurse. Your vocation as occupational safety consultant interested me because in my final years as a nurse I consulted on - among other things - OSHA rules, regs, and plans.

The Grass Dance was my first book, published in 2001 by PA. My second book, The Alley of Wishes, was released as a second edition in 2003 by Dandelion books. I live in a small Nebraska town and there are no writers' groups nearby. The Mindsight Forum and its members are my best learning experience.

I review for Midwest Book Review and Quill Poetry Quarterly.

I hope you enjoy your stay.

Hi, Gary! Good to see you here. I remember your posts on the PA board always being well worth reading. I think you'll find this a great place to hang out!

The only thing I know about Brainerd is from the movie "Fargo."
Thanks for the link offer, I'll email you shortly.

Laurel and Toyce, thanks for the kind welcomes. Yes, Laurel, OSHA rules and regs: I've so many of them rattling around upstairs I'm surprised anything creative ever forces its way out. Faribault is about three hours' drive south of Brainerd. We're in vacationland here; lots of fishing, boating and golf.

And Toyce, of course I remember you from the other board and am happy to be talking with you again. Regarding the movie Fargo, which I enjoyed, the only problem was its totally contrived portrayal of Brainerd. In one scene they showed a grain elevator; don't believe we have even a small version here. In other scenes they showed flat, open farmland; don't have much of that either. But we do have a few people who say "Yah" and "Uff-dah."

Welcome Gary,

I used to work for a guy whose family founded the town of Brainerd. He looked like George Segal, almost identical. He(and I) were working for a company called American Hospital Supply. I can't remember his first name but his last was Brainerd. I want to say Chuck, but am not sure if that was it. He and family were living in Long Beach, CA., at the time, about 30 years ago. That is all I know about the area. He was a really swell guy to work for, and he did say that his whole family were really nice people.

Anyhoo, welcome.......

Hi Gary,
Welcome to the fun. You must have started posting on the PA boards after my annihilation and subsequent burning at the stake. Glad to have you on board. Stephen Lodge is a good friend (and one of our authors) who belongs to the Western Writers of America. C.K. Crigger is also one of our authors and is a member as well.

"the current chair of the Brainerd Writers Alliance"

Ack! My uncle owns a radio station in Brainerd. It's a beautiful area and you are, indeed, in vacationland.

Hi Gary. Like Lynn, I was banned from the PA boards in February. Good to have you aboard! PS: Brainerd, as I recall, was where my favorite TV series of all time (Mystery Science Theater 3000) was filmed...at least I think it was Brainerd.

John, I love MST3K! Makes me laugh so hard I cry.

Gary, one of my favorite scenes in "Fargo" was when a deputy was questioning a man shoveling more snow than I've ever seen in my life, and at the end of their talk, he says, "Supposed to turn cold tomorrow."

Thanks everybody! Brainerd is a great place. Lynn, I have a link for Stephen Lodge on my web site and certainly know of C.K. Toyce, that "turn cold tomorrow" comment was funny -- and accurate. John, not sure about MST3K, but Brainerd seems to get its share of media and entertainment world attention. Anyway, look forward to participating here. Talk to all of you soon,

Oh, Claudia, almost forgot; out town was indeed founded by a man named Brainerd, logging and railroad tycoon whose choice of location for a train bridge across the Mississippi River assured Brainerd's existence while dooming an older, larger town called Crow Wing, several miles to the south. There, historical note for the month.
