Hey everyone,

I just checked the IPPY awards email that came in this afternoon. I was the finalist in the Current Events categoty. A book on the Iraq war was the winner - but I came in number 2. I'm happy with that.

There was no category for true-crime and so Jim Barnes told me to try the Current Events category. He said they will be getting a true-crime category but that did not help me this year. Because of the category-dealie I didn't have a good feeling about it.

Is being a finalist like being a bridesmaid and never a bride?

The name of my book by the way is:
BURNED
The True Story of the Sheila Bryan Murder Case

Anyway, some recognition is better than no recognition is my thought on the subject.

Major big hugs of congratulations to a tiny little writer. Jana, we're so proud of you! I'd say you're far more than a bridesmaid...more like the maid of honor.

Yes. I would definitely say you are far more than a bridesmaid coming in at number two in the Ippys. Congratulations! That is wonderful!

Jana,
That is really something. Congrats from someone who is learning how to do that sort of investigative work first hand. It is a real effort to get it right, there are so many IFs and WHAT IFs and WHYs to solve before you can really complete the story.

Really big congrats, again. And no, I don't think you could possibly be qualified as a bridesmaid, it was just that they weren't prepared for your type of book and didn't know how to place it, not your problem at all, theirs, though. You did what you were good at, you wrote it.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I know all of you know what it is like to work so hard on a book -- and all the while not knowing if you will get it published, or if you will ever make any money, or if there will ever be any recognition -- but you do it for the love of it. I think only other authors who are engaged in the strggle understand these feelings.

It is just a good feeling to finally have some one say: You done good girl.

So tonight I am happy. Can't hep it.

On another thread/post I had been telling you guys about this true-crime story my agent wanted me to write and it was a national story and had the attention of Kensington pub. If you may recall, I was saying that another author had written 90% of it and then had been killed by a drunk driver.

I wanted to update you on that, so I will do it here since I have no idea where on this board the original discussion is located. I have been deeply involved in this project lately which is why I have not been on the boards much. When I am writing I get obsessed and that's about the only word that comes close to describing my activity of late.

Drum roll. Let me tell you what this story is about.

Remember that Tri-State Crematorium story where Brent Marsh had 339 bodies lying around his property? Yup, that's the one. This happened in Noble, GA as you may recall. I live in Tifton, GA some 300 miles south of there. But my agent thought of me because it was a Georgia story and I write true-crime.

I have read Rock Thomas' (deceased author) prologue and first three chapters. Good stuff. Now I am trying to round up the rest of it - which my agent doesn't have but his family does. The DA tells me the criminal trial should be this fall. I will be there. My goal is to have it ready to roll except for the last chapter(s) on the criminal trial. The civil cases are complete now.

Rock got involved in this because his mother had been cremated (supposedly) at Tri-State six weeks before the story broke. His mother was one of the first bodies identified.

Last night I emailed my agent and told him about the IPPY and he emailed back and said, "That's good but the second one will be the charm." By the second one, he means this Tri-State story. Maybe so. We'll see.

I'm still grinning down here in South Georgia.

Congratulations on being an IPPY Finalist, Shortie. But more important, Good Luck with the new project re the crematorium. Do it up right and I think you'll have a work ripe for bestsellerdom.

Jana, that was a huge story, even here in the west.

Congrats on getting all that pre-work and that your agent chose you to do the rest of the work. I am sure that his family will be happy with the results and that you will have a great story out of it.

I am hoping that my lost body will be good enough, cause it has several angles in it that are current today although the murder took place in 1939.

Again, good going for snagging that one. It is a huge story and you will do it right.

Jana, congratulations. You're on a roll. Being a finalist in a writing competition isn't too shabby. And that story you're working on did make the national news. It's great to watch someone who was an unknown make it big in this tough business, and you're on your way! I'll be watching the New York Times when you're book comes out.

Mary
