For the back of your books or just an avatar, who does your pictures? I have a friend, am phototgrapher Mark Boatman, who does a great job of making me look surly....ok, that was GOD, but he is a great friend to have for book pics...for anyone who has seen the back of NOCTURNAL VACATIONS or BULLETPROOF SOUL. Also, do you find these pics important or that they make an impression fo any kind? www.stevenshrewsbury.com |

Thankfully, there is no picture of me on the back of The Butterfly Game. My mother-in-law was upset by that as swears she decides if she wants to read a book by looking at the picture of the author. I don't know how important they are though. I always enjoy seeing the author myself. My mom and my cousin took pictures of me for Flowers for Megan. It was hard to find one that didn't make me look like an ogre who just ate a village. Gloria

They convince people that you actually wrote the book... :-P To answer the question, my wife took the picture shown on the back of my book... |

Well, I don't buy books for the appearance of the author alone of course, just always think it is interesting to see what they look like. I recall seeing King, bearded and thinking "Damn what a freak!" I recall seeing Clive Barker and thinking, "That pip squeak writes that stuff????" www.stevenshrewsbury.com |

I don't like for readers to see my picture. That way I can pretend to be glamorous and mysterious hahahahahahahahahaha. |

When I am looking for a book, I don't care about the picture of the author. I'm more interested in the content of the book. Besides that, I prefer NOT to be recognized in public. I like being a private individual. I feel that having the authors picture on the cover -- and this is merely my own personal opinion -- it increases the personal risk and you lose some of your privacy. Okay. I'm a freak. We all know that. Whatever. LA LaurieAnne

Hi Steven,
STACY STYLE A professional is the only way to go for me. Who wants a picture on their book that looks like their ten-year-old child took it? For my books I provided a picture from the collection on my website that I had done by a photographer and for future books I plan to take new ones every so often. I definitely think the picture says it all. If you see a crummy picture of the author on the book it says that the author didn't take the time to make the best appearance possible. And that may turn off potential readers. BTW, I do landscape photography myself and hope to one day publish the photographs. It may be expensive to get quality photos done but it's worth it. We must remember that that one picture on our bio will go a long way and in the hands of a lot of people. I for one like getting pictures done. I get no complaints, LOL. www.stacy-deanne.net |

Pictures are in no way more important than content as someone mentioned. But if you are going to have a picture I think it should be the best it can be to represent you. Also I like seeing the author's picture on books I read. It's easier for me to relate to their writing if I can picture them. It's fun to see who the person who created the work looks like. I also respect people who do not want their pictures on their books. Whatever suits you should be the choice you make when it comes to pictures or not having them. |

For my first book I had a pro do the pic and I looked faily gamorous (for me), but for the second I'm going with one that was taken by my wife Liz at a Mayan village in the Mexican jungle. I look slightly cute, and adventurous. I just wanted something that showed another side of me for Empress of Clouds. I think it's a good quality pic, but I'm sure I'll go with another professional pic for the third book. One day, I'll get around to putting a pic on my posts here. Well the pic thing is personal preference of course. It is another small sector of book stuff seldom discussed. Another tidbit to the deal, I guess. Will be photographed for GODFORSAKEN soon...lots of ideas for that. However, I dunno if I care for the suggestion someone made...about the fur cod piece and wing tips... www.stevenshrewsbury.com |

"about the fur cod piece and wing tips..." I did not suggest wing tips... It's interesting to note the varying opinions pertaining to pictures. I like my picture to reflect me as a person, yet still capture the flavor of my book. My first book had a casual picture of me at our web designer's daughter's wedding at the beach. My second book (still only halfway finished) takes place in the Peruvian Amazon. That picture will have me sitting on top of the bag of boards we called a boat while floating along the Amazon River. Definitely casual and perfectly fitting for the book. Besides, I wanted to prove I had really been there, mosquito bites, piranha, and all. Lynn Lynn behlerpublications.com lynnprice.net

Well, a pal suggested the wing tips, knowing I wear boots or steel toed boots most of the time. Will probably wear black. Oddly enough, i don't own any bright pastels... I concur with Lynn that your pic should change for each book and probably for the subject matter. BTW, the Celtic sword I have been offered for use in these new shots will not be used as one might think...the spike maul my father used on the railroad in the 60s and 70s looks more dangerous, in fact...
