There is a mystery writer's conference coming up in October. The dates are 10/22 - 10/24.

Magna cum Murder is sponsored by Ball State University and is rapidly becoming one of the most prestigious conferences in the country. It is held in the historic Roberts Hotel in the old section of Muncie, Indiana.

This is my favorite of all conferences because it brings huge amounts of information while providing a fun and relaxed atmosphere that really promotes networking (schmoozing) with well established authors, agents, and publishers.

I consider it a must do thing.

Dennis,

I had so hoped to attend this, but that weekend is my son's 16th birthday, and of course there will be a big hoopla! Please let us know how it turns out!

The same weekend there will be a much smaller, I'm sure, mystery writer's book festival (Book Em) in Waynesboro, Virginia, just off where the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway meet.

Book 'Em is a first-effort book festival; I heard about it when I was asked to speak there. http://www.pmterrell.com/bookem.html

Are any of the mystery writers here planning to attend "Mayhem in the Midlands" in Omaha near the end of May?

Dennis,
I may get to Mayhem, it's only a few hours drive for me.

I attended a writer's conference yesterday (the only one that I get paid for) in Sarnia, Ontario. I had been hoping to make a connection with Poisoned Pen Press and Reviewingtheevidence.com but found that I couldn't circumvent the normal protocol. However I did score a library gig for later this summer in a library in one of Detroit's affluent suburban bedroom communities.

Strangely enough, I met another PA author there; shared a panel with her as a matter of fact. She lives in Toronto and her name is Julia Vryheid. She signed on with AmErica House at about the same time I did. Her book is titled "Killed by Common Sense." I'm planning on inviting her here to have a look. We had a nice discussion. Seems that there were a number of authors there who were quite familiar with PA.

Dennis, I got a question about Magna cum Murder. As these events limit the numbers of people they'll entertain, do you have a feel for how fast or slow they fill up? I'm seriously considering attending this one because two of the novels I am working on are mysteries. Each are at 20,000 words and I've a fairly clear head about where they will be going in the upcoming chapters. But this time of year is always a busy time for me and the writing stalls. But if I can finish at least one of these in the coming months, then I would like to attend McM.

Frank
Although Magna is an extremely popular conference, I've never known them to turn anybody away. I'd say that you'd definitely be safe if you registered by early September.
The biggest problem you'd likely face is that rooms at Hotel Roberts, the host hotel are all booked up. (They were all taken before the end of last years conference.) There is a very, very slim chance that I might be able to help with a room because I stay there every year. But it's a college town so there are many local motels and some are quite reasonable. The conference committee is always helpful in getting rooms.
It would be great if you could attend.

As a side note... If the weather is not predicted to be stormy, I RIDE there.

Thanks for the info, Dennis. I'll let you know if and when I sign up. And if I do, I'll probably ride the Beemer. Might even chart a route through Larry Bird's hometown of French Lick, seeing that he is an all-time favorite hoopster of mine.
