Hi all. I've been giving this topic a lot of thought, and wondered what your opinions are.

I know of two self-publishing companies that have already shown an interest in my book. They used to be a husband/wife team, but alas, divorce divided not only their marriage, but their company as well.

One is Selah Publishing, and I don't have the name of the other handy.

Do you guys know of any you could recommend?

Victoria - what are your views on self-publishing? My book is being professionally edited this time (live and learn), and I want desperately to get it into the hands of those who are waiting.

Best,

Vickie

Vicky,

An argument could be made that you are self-publishing with PA, only without the major part of the expenditure (the printing).

Seriously though, if you have the time and energy (and wherewithall) to self-promote and market, and basically the inclination to run your own business (which is what it would be), why NOT self publish? Each book will be a fraction of the cost, you could probably work a deal with UPS and/or FedEx for shipping by setting up an account. This Self-Publishing company is really only giving you one thing (most likely) and that is the ISBN, right? You could get the ISBN yourself, and go straight to a printer and cut even them out and put a little logo "Adkins Press" on the spine. No, I'm not being facetious.

You could pay $1-2.00 per copy, with a four-color cover (don't sound like much, but it is - inkjet printers only have 3 colors, usually) and it would look just as good as PA's, or better. You could even (gasp) use lightning source themselves, unless they have some particular corporate only agreement or something.

There are industry opinions of self-publishing, but they can be overcome.

But you have to be ready for the amount of all-out work it will be... and it will be.

Keep a couple of things in mind if you decide on self-publishing...

1. If you go to a subsidy publisher..even 1stbooks or something, VERy few newspapers will cover you. The first question they asked me when I approached them was "Did you pay or is it traditional?"

2. I have been pricing printing over the past week. So far, the best deal I can find (corporate rate) is $3.07 per book...and that's for a run of 1000. Any less and the price goes up dramatically.

(I checked out the second because of a little bug in my mind...)

Kevin,

That seems steep to me. But I have not done the research. Are you looking at POD or at offset?

Take a look at these sites. I was just researching on the net today and these are the first few I came across. Look at their prices, the packages, and tell me what you think.

www.trafford.com
www.aboutbooks.com
and Griffith Publishing. I can't remember their site right off hand, and am guessing at the second one. I think that's how I remember them.

Best,

Vickie

I'm very unhappy with PA (for the obvious reasons, stated a thousand times elsewhere by others) but they refuse to release me from my contract.

The contract says they have an "exclusive right to publish my literary work called <title>. in book form" I however retain the full copyright.

I want to give my book a new title and to make some minor changes - effectively making it a new literary work which I plan to self-publish. Whilst I doubt that PA would even notice I want to cover myself.

Does anyone know how much I would have to change it legally to make it a different literary work? Obviously as I own the copyright to the original I can't be in breach of my own copyright! Can I get away with just changing a few paragraphs?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Steven
