Hi All, I know I do not post here much. I am a lurker, but I thought I could share this with you. Well, I not only fell through the cracks at Waldenbooks, I am stuck, at least for six months until Ingram gets it together. I was disappointed that they were unable to sell my books for the Alzheimer's Association fundraiser because Ingram shows my books as not in stock. It was set up and Waldenbooks would have donated 20% of the sales. Then at the planning meeting with two store managers and a rep from the AA, I was told it was a no go. I sat through the next half hour listening to them set the fundraiser up without me. However, the rep and I went to lunch and we set up a fundraiser I will do on my own. Here is the letter I am sending out. If any of you have had a loved one suffering with Alzheimer's disease, than you can relate to the pain it causes a family. If you can help either by purchasing a book (You won't regret the read) or by forwarding the letter to others, I would really appreciate it. _____________________________________________________ Fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association Dear Friends, My father is a navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served in the Pacific and the Atlantic arenas aboard the USS Vulcan. After his time of service, he married my mom and they settled in a Maryland suburb where they raised their six children. He has been a great dad and a loving husband. They still live in the house they bought in 1949 and have been married for fifty-seven years. A few years ago, my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He is now eighty-two. It has been a heartbreaking experience for my family. Alzheimer’s is a complex disease that affects the brain. Approximately 4.5 million Americans have this disease. Most of the Alzheimer’s Association’s funding comes from the general public — people like you and me. Our support makes a difference in the lives of people facing Alzheimer’s and supports research to improve treatment, care, and prevention strategies. This is why I have committed to donate a large portion of my royalties to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of my dad. Please visit my website. There you can read the synopsis for each book, reviews, and sample chapters. If you decide to purchase one of my historical novels, I thank you for helping to contribute to The Alzheimer’s Association. Please let me know if you do, so I can send you a token of my thanks. I'll be happy to help as well, Rita. I'm so sorry for your book troubles. I know how frustrating it is to be stymied by bureaucratic details when you're trying to do something so worthwhile. I cannot send you both enough thanks. It means so much when fellow authors are so supportive. I posted this on the PA private board and have gotten zero responses. I cannot post on the other board because they banned me. Anyway, with my chin up I am moving ahead. Thank you so much for your help. If my Dad could, he would thank you too. Blessings, Rita Gerlach |

Sorry to hear about your woes, Rita... Did the Waldenbooks folks tell you it was because of the Ingram situation? Mindsight Moderator Check out Who Needs a Hero?

The manager did not know what was going on with Ingram. All he said was what showed up on their computer when he went to order. I called Baker & Taylor and spoke to a really nice lady (she and her staff are getting all three of my novels to pass around the office). She told me they showed 'out of stock'. She then explained to me that Lightning Source is not stocking POD books, and they would have to be 'backordered', with a fee attached, and that it would take from six to twelve weeks for delivery. She also told me Publish America is listed as a POD publisher with them. So, yes. The Ingram situation did this. How can authors be expected to go through this for the next six months! Rita, as I said in my email to you, I'm so sorry for what happened and my heart goes out to you and your wonderful cause. Despite that publisher's claims that there is nothing to worry about, it's a crock. Only publishers like Kevin Grover's Winterwolf will actually do the work necessary to get out from this mess. PA will do nothing because they've already proven they don't want to sell book other than to their authors. Wow. You got banned? Lynn behlerpublications.com lynnprice.net

I was just curious, Rita, because you'd mentioned that Waldenbooks was going to donate 20% of sales to your cause...last I'd heard (from bookstores who attempted to order), stores' orders through Ingram for PA books (this was before all the current mess) were only given a 20% discount to start with... The info you mentioned from the folks at B&T is rather scary... Hope you're able to get something worked out in the interim... Mindsight Moderator Check out Who Needs a Hero?

Hi Nancy, I have some copies I can mail, yes. I also have two book signings coming up and that will help. Todd, The bookstore manager told me their chain gets 40% off when they order PA books. Whether that is direct or through Ingram I don't know. He told me they prefer to go through Ingram. The whole issue is scary. I've been getting emails from lots of authors who are very concerned. I believe 40% is for direct orders from PA...for certain quantities... although I could be wrong... Mindsight Moderator Check out Who Needs a Hero?

We had a Walden Books store at the local Galleria. There was also a Dalton bookstore in the same mall. Two blocks down there was a Crown bookstore. Then Barnes and Noble came along and they all three closed. It seems a bit strange that a city of 260,000 people (I live in Riverside, California) can't support more than one large corporate bookdealer. http://www.fdungan.com/bushwhacked.htm |

I mentioned the closures by way of demostrating how unstable bookstores have become. The big fish eat the little fish. Perhaps this partially explains why Waldenbooks "fell through the cracks." |

"Two blocks down there was a Crown bookstore" Wow, Fred, I haven't seen a Crown bookstore in years. Ours (I live in south Orange County) closed down years ago. Lynn behlerpublications.com lynnprice.net

It might be partially due to the management at the mall. We used to have two bookstores in our local mall (owned by Simon)... According to my sources, the ownership (Simon) decided they wanted just one bookstore in the mall, and so it happened (Waldenbooks closed down)...(not certain of the specifics on how they did that, but one can guess) The other store apparently didn't meet the needs of the public (or couldn't afford the inflated lease), because they closed their doors as well... So now, we have no stores in the local mall. Fortunately, we still have three other stores (chains, I'm not including indy or used stores) around...but still, it's rather unnerving not to see a bookstore in a mall...when there are 100 different varieties of expensive clothing stores around... (there's still a computer software store, so all is not completely lost) Mindsight Moderator Check out Who Needs a Hero?
