Heya'll,

So... I recently picked up a program called DesktopX by Stardock.

It's a shell overlay for windows, which allows you to customize windows in some really cool ways.

I created the following Mindsight Forum desktop with it:

Mindsight Forum DesktopX

So, in essence, my desktop is an embedded browser window, which always has the Mindsight Forum loaded. (Sick, eh?)

Soon I will bundle it up and let y'all play with it, if you like. Oh yeah, some of the other elements on my desktop are embedded system properties, clock, and weather center.

If you're interested in learning more about DesktopX, check out http://www.wincustomize.com, some pretty cool stuff.

It is cool, CE. Someday, when my computer is mine alone and not shared with four other people, I will take advantage of cool things like that.

Actually, I'm running a gig of DDR ram, but the desktopX program doesn't need much, since it runs right over the windows shells.

I think, in truth, it will be processor cache that the system uses more than ram, but I get a little fuzzy when I start thinking about that kind of stuff.

Here's a blurb from Stardock about resources, etc...

quote:

Performance & Resources

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will DesktopX slow down my system?

DesktopX itself won't. Think of DesktopX as a new way of creating things. In itself, it has little overhead. You can run DesktopX on a Pentium 2-233Mhz machine without a problem. Objects and themes, on the other hand, can use little or lots of resources, CPU, memory, etc. depending on what they do. A simple object that checks your email status can be run without a problem on any system. On the other hand, an object that does full motion video or 3D rendering would be much more intensive.

From a purely technical point of view, DesktopX is more like a programming language. C++, for instance, doesn't have overhead in itself. There are programs written with it that use little in resources and ones that use a lot.

Like I said, I'll be making the Mindsight Forum desktop X theme available for forum users who want it (if anyone does), but since it's an embedded internet connection, it would naturally work best if you are on broadband. I can also make other packaged themes, and may, that don't require the full-time connection, but beyond that, there are things with this system that are really interesting productivity tools (for example, another theme I have connects to my outlook to display my meeting schedules right on the desktop, which can be very handy). You can embed stock quotes, google searches, weather (as you see on mine) and whatnot.

I admire those of you who understand such things.

Me, I consider myself blessed if my email works and Mindsight loads and I don't get any viruses.

Everything else is beyond me.
