We mark a new year, a new frontier with the passing of a single moment on the clock. Yet, if we were to sit in the middle of a desert or on the peak of a mountain, that moment would have no more importance than the second before and the second after. As humans, we have a need to measure ourselves. Our lives, our accomplishments, and yes, even our failures. We measure time in birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. We need to remind ourselves of what happen 365 days previous to that one special day, that one special moment. So, why is it that we make our new year's resolutions? Can we not decide on any random day to better ourselves? Will we not realize the errors of our ways until a holiday is available so as to permit us to track those changes? 2004 passed away unmarked, uncelebrated in the deep of many forests, in the solitude of many deserts. We should learn to accept the day we awake in as the gift of life for which to be our best. Wait not for a special moment to appear, for it may not come. There is no time like now to cherish the past and prepare for a brighter future. New Years will come and fade just as fast. It is what we make of those 365 days between each one that permits us to be who we are. Just some random thoughts from Spain. Frederick A. I haven't had a drink since I was admitted to a VA hospital on July 23. My New Year's resolution is to drink more beer. http://www.fdungan.com/vigilantes.htm |

Well, Fred Dungan, I think you deserve at least a few beers after what you have been through. I would hope for your continued rehab to go well and your new knees to work very well and carry you for the rest of your days without any pain or suffering. Frederick Babb, I DO NOT make resolutions at all, ever, never have, and never will, for exactly the reasons you stated above. I try to live each and every day as if it is my first and do the best with whatever that day brings on. I do look back and try to learn from things that happened, but I will always look forward with more enthusiasm than I look back, and when I look back it is to learn and make my self more capable of doing it, whatever it is, better the next time. I do not always succeed, and often make mistakes along the way, but that is the human frailty and one of the laws of life, so there is no reason to sweat the small stuff, and I make every effort to make the big stuff more lasting and important. However, that is NOT a resolution, just my way of life. Laurel, I think that you and I think pretty close to the same on many issues and practices. At least, I would like to think and hope that, for I admire you immensely. Claudia MINDSIGHT MODERATOR

Hi Fred, Here, here, Fred! I agree with you. I already made up my mind to have a good 2005. I had to. The past year was terrible. I am glad 2004 is over. I can't say that enough. So many terrible things happened, whatever went wrong, went wrong. At times I didn't think I would get through it. I had never been so close to the breaking point in my life. Last year was the worst I've experienced so far and I'll leave it at that. If 2005 doesn't bring me happiness or relief from misery then I don't know if I will be able to hang on. Hopefully the bad is behind me and I have a feeling this will be my year. I wish everyone a great 2005! Stacy-Deanne www.stacy-deanne.net |

Hey Stacy, 2004 wasn't a good year because you didn't let me give you any foot massages... Seriously, I hope 2005 brings you joy, dreams fulfilled and all the pleasure you could ever wish for. And if it doesn't, email me and I will cheer you up. Frederick A. Babb Preview books: http://www.frederickbabb.bravehost.com |

Fred you could be right. I tell you a good foot massage would have relieved at least a fourth of my worry. And you don't have to worry about me not emailing you because you're a writer buddy I love keeping in touch with. I wish you a great 2005 too! I am sure you'll have one. Seriously what you said was great. Part of my problem this year was not being able to talk through a lot of things. Sometimes just venting helps a lot. Stacy |
