I don't know how many of you know who Jack L. Chalker was. I discovered Chalker's books back in high school and devoured many of them. Jack never met a gender transformation theme he didn't like and his books are filled with them. I had the pleasure of corresponding with Jack (yes, I was even on a first name basis with him) regarding an anthology of gender-bending fiction of which I was briefly editor. He was considering collaborating, but other deadlines and his diminishing health prevented him from doing so. He was a pleasure to communicate with, a true gentleman and total professional. He was a prolific writer. His novels include: Midnight at the Well of Souls, The Identity Matrix, Downtiming on the Nightside, and many dozens of others. Jack had been sick for some time.

I recieved this email today:

Here's the very sad details as reported by Jack's son, Stephen:

February 10th, 2005
BREAKING NEWS!!!! "Latest word from my Mom. He was bleeding from his trach yesterday, and he was bleeding in his pee. He also had his kidneys fail, and his
lungs have failed. He’s even too sick to have a kidney transplant, so they are going to let him die." I think this is the end of Jack Chalker.

As of 11:12AM Friday, February 11th, 2005, Jack Lawrence Chalker has passed away and is now in a greater place. We thank all that have kept Jack in his
thoughts and prayers.

Well, there you have it. How about a few moments of silence for a sci-fi great?

Sorry, Diana. Sounds like you lost a good friend and mentor. That hurts. I lost my good friend and mentor, Beinvenido Santos, a few years back. He was also my creative writing teacher. See http://members.rogers.com/bensantos/
