Well Bill and Sheila and all you good folks living in Texas, I pray you are spared any devastation from Rita. The Editor of New Works Review emailed his staff and said he and his wife are evacuating Friendswood TX and heading eight hours north into Norman Oklahoma. He said they "rode out" Hurricane Alicia years ago and won't go that macho route again.

I'll be praying for Rita to take a southerly turn, or for your safety if it doesn't.

Most assuredly, Laurel..... everyone should take to the high ground, especially YOU SHEILA...... You can get back in plenty of time to help all those needing it, but get the hell out of the path if you are anywhere near it (this little note of concern and love comes from your self-adopted Mom and Gramma to those lovely kids of yours). Tom, you too..... Please stay safe, high and dry. And just as importantly, please take care of all the animals, put them in as safe a place possible. Tom, I know that your pup is a huge part of your life. So take good care of that black labby beauty.

Thank you. Tucker thanks you, too. Went out this morning and picked up essentials...booze, cigarettes, canned food, bottled water, dog food, etc. Also hit the ATM for cash...without power, credit and debit cards will be useless. Son Jeff, Tucker and I will try to ride it out here. There are places we could go, but we'd just have to turn around and come back. Have you ever tried to board up windows in a brick house? Where do you pound the nails?Quick, tell me! (We're trying to maintain our sense of humor. Tucker thinks we're acting very strange. He'll change his mind about Friday.)

P. S. Interesting note: the giant NASA center has been completely evacuated. It's in the flood plain. Mission control for the international space station has been handed off to Russia.

That info came from the NBC-TV affiliate in Houston - KPRC-TV - which has pre-empted all regular programming since 5 a. m. and has broadcast non-stop news coverage. My hat is off to them. Hopefully, the revenue loss (translate: profits) will come back to them a hundredfold. It is capitalism at its best.

Cat 5 and still growing - Hey guys - those in Texas please RUN - don't sit it out unless you are on the other side of dallas - the thing is scary.

A few years back - I lived a hundred miles from the coast and Hugo made a disaster of Charlotte. When you watch hundred year old pines crack and break like matchsticks, your prayer-life goes into overdrive. the solid brick house shook from the force of the winds.

If you planned to stay, please re-consider.

Tom, you have to get masonry screws and use wooden blocks to hold the plywood over the windows. Believe me, I know.

Does anyone know is San Padre Island had been evacuated. I can't seem to catch the news at the right time. I have family there...and in Longview...and in Dallas...well, frankly, all over the state.

Tom, take cover.
Sheila,
Bill,
etc.

My doors are always open (though it's a long trek to Michigan) and I have extra sleeping areas.

LA -

I have a buddy on Padre. Anybody there in his right mind is gone, I would think. It's just a sand bar right on the Gulf.
