Anyone investigated the new SHORTS -- short stories --- etc.??

The only compensation for posting material I could find was for web site hits.

It sounds like a great idea but as with some other less than desirable publishers, will there be any screening of material?

The only thing I noticed was that they cost 49 cents per download and wondered if the author got any of that.

Laurel, I contacted Amazon, and heard back from them...

Excerpts from the fact sheet they sent:
-Revenue split 60/40 between Amazon and author
-Amazon covers all costs for payment, transaction and customer service
-To be eligible for Amazon Shorts, authors must at a minimum be the sole author of at least one book or product currently for sale on Amazon.com
-Exclusive to Amazon.com for a limited period (6 months is what they told me)

So, 40% of 49 cents is approximately 20 cents per sale.
A person could almost make more than certain royalty checks...hmmmm...
Maybe I'll try it out with a short story...Aston's been out of the limelight quite a while. If I could assure myself no one would buy Hero based on the short story...

And another question. How do you copyright a short story? My parsimonious nature does not permit me to pay $30 every time I write one. I would consider a collection, but at present I have only one, plus a bunch of essays. Maybe group them a give it a title???

I'll now attempt to upload the fact sheet Amazon sent me...

application/mswordAmazon Shorts Fact Sheet
Amazon Shorts Fact Sheet7-JH (3).doc (285.2 k)

You can also ask questions (though it may take a few days to get a full response) via amazon-shorts@amazon.com

"Thank you for your e-mail regarding Amazon Shorts. As you know, the program recently made its debut on Amazon.com (www.amazon.com/shorts) and we're confident it will be a tremendous success for both authors and readers. To give you an overview of this new initiative, please take the time to review the attached Fact Sheet. Please note that we are seeking previously unpublished works (approx. 2,000 to 10,000 words) from a wide range of genres to include in the program. In addition to featuring author’s work, we will also create an author profile page complete with photo, biography and bibliography.

If, after perusing the fact sheet, you would like to be considered for inclusion in this program, please contact me at *****. Upon acceptance, I will send you additional information. Also, we do require that all works be exclusive to Amazon for a minimum of six months. Thanks again for your e-mail and I look forward to hearing from you."

As for the question regarding short story copyrights, I know Steve writes tons of short stories, so maybe he could come and describe what he does in terms of copyrights. However, copyright is official as soon as you pen the work, registration is really only effective if you have to take someone to court (as I understand). I wouldn't think you'd need to copyright each individual story.

Lynn -

I'd say you're smelling exactly the right amount of ink fumes. Great line. What brand of ink?

Gee, Tom, I have no idea. Whatever ink the printer uses in our books. It's getting galleys out to reviewers time and, well, time for a cheap high.

I've been out of town and away from my computer. While I was gone my memoir about my mother showed up on Amazon Shorts. I'm thrilled that they accepted it, esp. since some of the other authors have a bit more prestige, e.g. Danielle Steel. Now all I need it for someone to go there and pay 49 cents to read it. It's titled The Girl Known as Gulli. My mother would have been 100 this past June, had she lived. She emmigrated from Sweden when she was two years old.

Claudia and Perry. Thanks for the well-wishing. I don't know how many people will download the story, but since they also highlight my book, I thought it might be another marketing tool. I sure could use a great review on my short piece, like Claudia is known to give. It might entice people to download it. I'll come and wash your feet and your dog and your toilet -- okay, that's going far enough. :-)

Mary,
could you send it to me separately from your own story..... in a hard copy form, (even sheets of paper, stapled together will do), through the mail? I would be glad to do a review of it, I just spend so damn much time on the internet reading stuff that I have to, that I really don't like to do it for pleasure there.

Okay, Claudia. I'll send it to you on Monday. It shouldn't take long to read, since it's only 18 pages. And thanks. P.S. Send me your dog to wash. I'll get to your feet and toilet later. :-)

Mary, where does one review the Amazon Short? I saw where it can be rated and completed that part, but could find no place to write a review? I adored your piece. You had me from the first paragraph.
