Here's my review of The Gospel According to Condo Don:

"This book cuts right to the chase and pulls no punches. Although it's a horribly mixed metaphor, this statement is also completely true. The Gospel According to Condo Don is all at once a series of spiritual lessons that neither condescend nor condemn, an unapologetic portrayal of the best and worst things about modern society, and a hilarious exposé of the parodies that pass for government agencies. And scattered throughout are subtly beautiful passages and scenes that are as poetic as any to be found in the greatest works of literature.

Fred Dungan has to be the most fearless author I've ever read. The only place he takes on bigger foes than he does in this book is on his own website, which I highly recommend--but only if you have at least an entire day to spend reading."

I loved it, Fred, and I so hope we get to meet at the Mindsight Gathering so I can get my copy autographed!

Thank you, Joyce. I should mention that this book was researched and written in the 1990's. Much of the action takes place in and around the deteriorating ecosystem of the Salton Sea, the restoration of which symbolizes Jesus' saving grace. I predicted that it would be restored by means of a dike and that has actually come to pass within the specified time frame (to read the fascinating true life story of the Salton Sea go to http://www.fdungan.com/salton.htm.

In 1968 at the age of 19, the Army sent me and a lot other citizen-soldiers to Panama to hold onto a 5 mile strip of jungle on either side of the canal. From the beginning it was obvious that some of us wouldn't make it back. I had a strong premonition - based on the fact that I was better with books than I was with guns - that my time was up. I prayed hard, promising that if God permitted me to survive, I would write a novel praising Jesus and his good works. Of course, as soon as I got home, I returned to my old ways. Years later, I got reminded of my promise and ended up learning the hard way why we should always keep our word. The Gospel According to Condo Don was my attempt to redeem myself in the eyes of God. It was first published in 1997 in Northern Ireland at the height of the sectarian violence. I would like to think that it's message of faith without borders played a miniscule part in restoring sanity to Northern Ireland.

Fred, what an incredible story behind an already remarkable book! Did you get any support from Domhan for promotional efforts? I would think they'd be able to get you interviewed by publications/broadcasts with ties to veterans or either religious or environmental groups. I don't know how much good it will do, but I plan to tell everyone on all my lists about your book.

Thank you, Joyce. Your efforts on my behalf are greatly appreciated. Siobahn McNalley, the founder of Domhan Books, was extremely helpful in the production and promotion of the book. In fact, my experience with Domhan was so positive that I wasn't prepared for what happened at PublishAmerica. I was amazed that the multi-billion dollar publishing industry didn't care enough about its image to rid itself of the rotten apples.

Fred, just wanted to let you know that I recommended your book to POD-dy Mouth (http://girlondemand.blogspot.com/) as one of her 2006 selections. The winners of her Needle Awards and several others of the books she reviews have been offered contracts by major publishers and/or agents, and I truly believe the world needs to know about The Gospel According to Condo Don.

Best of luck to you, Fred. And, as I told POD-dy mouth, I'm just shamelessly trying to glom on to some of the Heavenly rewards you're sure to get for this amazing book.

To give POD-dy mouth her due, here is what she had to say about PublishAmerica:

Why isn't PublishAmerica doing what iUniverse is doing?
Judy Klein of Kleinworks has officially been hired by iUniverse to sell subsidiary and foreign rights for their Star titles. Why do I say officially? Because she has already sold such rights for a bunch of iUniverse titles, including TORPEDO by Jeff Edwards (including audio rights!), VLAD DRACULA by Michael Augustyn and Mark Alan Morris's THE GHOST NEXT DOOR, as well as others.

The significance? As far as I know, iUniverse is the first and only POD publisher (non-small press) to proactively try to sell subsidiary (movie, audio, etc.) and foreign rights for their authors--and that includes PublishAmerica, which as a traditional publisher (geez, what's with all the lightning outside?!) they should be doing already.

Maybe I should have sent Hero through iUniverse...I could have used some of those subsidiary rights sales...

I'm impressed. Mine is still under a stack of papers on my desk...not enough to pay for the gas to drive to the bank.
