Been a while, folks. I just have to tell you, though, about the best kept secret for writers and visual artists I've come across. You really need to check it out. For writing you need to go to www.FanStory.com and for visual art www.FanArt.com. I'll talk about FanStory. You can visit for free, but to get actively involved you have to pay forty-something for one year, sixty-something for two years. Here's what you get. You can post your short stories and novels (chapter by chapter) for review. You are guaranteed to receive 3 reviews for each piece submitted. The reviews are given by your peers in FanStory. Some are superficial, some very deep and meaningful. Along with the review you get from one to six stars. FanStory keeps score for how you are rated as a writer. Also, you are encouraged to review. You get points (dollars) that can be applied towards getting your "piece" re-introduced to the reviewers after the intitial 3 reviews are given. This is a complicated process, but just know that you are encouraged to review and submit. By the way, your writing remains your own property. FanStory has no proprietory rights to your creative works. But, it doesn't end there. There is a contest for newcomers where you have to write on a theme (from 700 to 7000 words). The winner gets a Visa card for $100. There are reducing prizes for 2nd and 3rd places. The same prizes go for newcomers in the poetry contest. So far, I am tied for 3rd place in the short story contest. But there are a few more days of voting. Besides the newcomers, there is a general short story and poetry contest every month, plus other contests spread throughout the year (like the summer contest.) But, it doesn't end there. If a person whose piece you are reviewing is particularly impressed by your review he/she can award you a reviewing "thumbs up" nomination. Each month the editors (or whatever the owners or powers that be for the website are called) go through the nomination and read the actual reviews that person did and then award that reviewer $100 for his (you'll notice I didn't write his/her here, because I've already been nominated and I really want to win that $100) efforts. But, it doesn't end there. Well, I guess it does. Check it out, though. You get a whole heck of a lot for 40 something a year. I'm having a ball! Jay |

What? Did everyone go away for the 4th? No one's posted in what seems like forever. Novels by Stephen Lodge: "Shadows of Eagles" "Charley Sunday's Texas Outfit!" "Nickel-Plated Dream"

Stephen, it's like a big, empty hall. I heard the echo of my voice, but thought someone was home. Seriously, Stephen, check out FanStory. They even have a catagory for scripts. And, Laurel, I placed third in the short story newcomer's competion. my story was too long to get enough people to read it. At least that's what I thought. At least that's the excuse I give myself for not placing first. I was expecting FanStory to shuttle it off to the O Henry awards, but all I got was a stinkin' 3rd place. It was fun, though. And, I'm already at work on next month's contest on a story that starts with the words "Is anyone out there?" Good luck to everyone there. Jay |
