Would you be interested in communicating with foreign writers? See what you have in common, and in what ways you might differ? Or just talk about writing or general subjects?

The idea would be that some foreign writers would visit Mindsight, and that Mindsighters who would like, would visit the foreign site. A form of cultural exchange.

If Mindsight will place a link on their forum to the other site, then a link to Mindsight will also be placed on the other site.

The site is already working at an international area where everybody will use the English language, as there will also be other people welcomed outside Mindsighters.

There will be forums just to chat about anything and nothing, a discussion forum, a place for poems, lyrics, stories and announcements. English will be mandatory in that area of the forum, so no double Dutch. To explore the rest of the site you will need babelfish or something like that.

If you would rather avoid discussions of some kind, you will only need to stay out of that specific topic in the discussion forum. (And don’t worry; I’m rarely into such discussions these days.)

It concerns a Dutch writers site. You can have a look to get an idea:

http://forum.new-avalon.nl/

(If the international part of the site is not there yet, check again a few days later.)

Harry,

It is an interesting idea. As long as political fervor is kept to a
minimum, it could work. If Bush bashing starts up, it will end up in
a cyber name-calling match.

You can count me as a Yes.

Bill,

I can’t guarantee that nobody will mention Bush, and I would not like to ban mentioning the topic.
What I could do is advice the people about certain sensitivities, but perhaps it would be better that if such a topic would occur; you would tell them yourself you would rather not discuss it.
If visitors mention the topic at Mindsight, it is of-course up to the moderators here to decide how to deal with that, and up to the regular Mindsighters how to respond.

My guess is that sometime during the weekend the 'International Corner' will be ready.

I noticed that New Avalon has his "International Corner," so if you want you can have a look, sign up, and participate!

Read the Announcements in the international corner first, to find out how you can set the forum language to English.

http://forum.new-avalon.nl/

Lots of fun! I might meet you there later!

Bill,

You don't need Babelfish for the international corner, as that is all in English.

If you want to post you do need to register though, and after that you will be able to set the language of the forum itself to English, (ofcourse not the posts outside of the international corner.)
You can read how that should be done in the announcements in the international corner.

I actually can't remember how the screen looks like for non-registered people, but you might look for something called 'aanmelden,' meaning register.

I know the forum is in English, but registration is Dutch and I don;t know
what the problem is. Something about my Guardword (Password) not being proper????

I'll try later. First I want to see if it accepts Joyce. You know the old saying, "I don't want to belong to an organization that has me as a member." It's sort of like that.

Hi, My name is Mylène and I am the owner of that other forum. To make our little exchange program a bit easyer I have put the settings of the forum into english so nobody would have any problem with the register.

About the bush subject, well I can't promise nobody ever brings it up but we're a writers forum and not a politic discussion panel. Over all we rarely have any discussions about politics of any kind. Besides that we will closely monitor any discussion that might come up and have an amount of forum rules about what is permitted and what is not. Don't feel threatend to visit us once in a while there are actually a lot of nice people there and there is nothing to be afraid of.

Mylene,

Welcome to the US.

I hope Harry's idea takes off here. We can use some good exchange of ideas
with other cultures.

My hope is many from both forums will join in on some topics.

As stated here by several, writers should be opinonated and not limit their
thinking to just writing. Social issues are reasonable, as long as we're all civil to one another.

Cheers.

Thank you, Mylene.

It was nice of you to come introduce yourself and to invite us over. And a big thanks to Harry also for trying to get us over the huge gap of the ocean and make visits possible.

I am sure that there will be people coming over to visit once they find that there is some good discussion going on, however, it might take some time, but it will be well worth the participation. As for myself, at the moment I am involved waist-high in construction on my home and rather tied up, but I will be over once the dust dies down and I can find my way around with time to be visiting others. I am also one of the ones that Moderates this board, so my name might become familiar to many who come over here and if there are questions that I or some of the other Moderators can answer just ask, one of us is most usually around. Dennis Collins, Todd Hunter, and Nancy Mehl are the other Moderators names you can pass around to anyone who has a need. And of course, there is the owner of the Board, C. E. Winterland, should something big arise. I can't promise immediate answers, but if a question is asked, the answer will come fairly soon, either by the board here or email, should the person wanting to know something, want an email sent and the return address is given.

Again, WELCOME to our board and tell all to feel free to join in where-ever anyone wants.

At work I have a Wintel machine, and I have printed all the ASCII codes and stuck them on the wall.

Perhaps it's true that there are only seventeen people using a Mac, but it's hard to believe that two of them will be down for maintenance. The Wintel machines I had cost me a lot more time to keep running. There is also a Ctrl/Alt/del like emergency brake for the Mac, but I don't know it, as I rarely need it. Ctrl/Alt/del was the first I learned when dealing with PC's.
My Mac is being used and abused by the whole family, but still no problems.

A Mac is like a Toyota car: you can neglect them, but they still keep going.

The only drawback of Mac's is that they are not for gamers, the rest all works.
I can load and produce Word documents if I want to, using Appleworks. I don't need extra software to convert music from wave to MP3 to whatever. I actually don't need any extra software, as it is all allready there; even a C compiler.

I made one mistake: I gave my old PC to my son, and so I still need to spent lots of time to keep a computer going.

The first computer I had was an Apple. Ran on DOS, of course.
Text only, no graphics, no sound (except a bell or two), a tiny green
screen.

I used to buy those Do It Yourself programs and make games (Dragons and Dungeons, for one.) I made my son a version of D&D that asked math questions. If you got it right you advanced; if not, you were eaten by an Ogre.

Speaking of Joyce, what Character Map?

An Apple that ran DOS? I take it you are not reffering to Microsoft's DOS, but Disk Operating System in general?

I actually have to take that back about Mac's that keep going. A few hours ago a friend called, who is also one of those seventeen people to inform me that his fifteen year old Mac had harddisk trouble.
(It still worked though, but with hick ups.)

My first computer was a Sinclair ZX80, no sound, no color, 1K memory, and every time I pressed a key the picture disappeared. "This is normal," said the manual. I didn't agree with that statement.
After that I had all kinds of computers: Atari XL800, Aquarius, Spectrum 128, PC SX25.
The Atari was lots of fun, I used that to make phonecalls as you could hook up some electronics to it.

Character Map comes with all versions of Windows and is found by clicking Start--> All Programs--> Accessories--> System Tools.

My kids and I used to play those Hugo text games together where you typed in commands for the characters and solved mysteries. You had to phrase things just so, and if you told Hugo to do anything like "kick" or "hit", the game would respond "You really need to control those violent tendencies!"

BTW, my daughter informed me that the ALT-key combinations only work using the numbers on the keypad and not at the top of the keyboard, so you must have NUMLOCK engaged to use them.

Oh, that character map.

Tom,
An easier way to add the copyright symbol is,
while banging along in Word, simply hit alt/control/C and keep on going.
