good morning everyone, at 8:00 AM (PST) this morning it was New Year's In Sydney, AUS. HAPPY NEW YEAR'S TO ALL NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE or WHEN YOUR PARTICULAR NEW YEAR ARRIVES....... Hope that it brings each and every one of you all that you want or hope for this coming year. Rub those Budda bellies, or pieces of jade, kiss the ground or the blarney stone if you are of that persuasion, pray to God that this New Year doesn't bring all those doomsday promises up and hope and get out there and try something new if that is your desire, gain whatever it is you are wanting to gain, be it love, wealth, happiness or great contentment. I wish for all the best of 2008 to come to each of you.

I had a great time Stephen.

We listened to music, talked and joked a lot and almost forgot the hour of twelve.
The kids showed some stamina and all managed to reach 2008 in full conciousness.

One of our friends had brought quite a bit of fireworks with him, also fun to watch.

But I still have to clean up a bit of the mess though and after that we are off to visit our parents.

How did you all survive your new year?

My wife likes to get her "New Year's Kiss" at the stroke of midnight, so we stayed up...earlier in the evening, we were at my dad's house, eating and drinking (the non-alcoholic variety). All in all, it was a good time.

Looking forward to what 2008 will bring...

Happy New Year's!!!!

Harry, do you all have anything particular that you MUST eat for good luck on New Year's Day? Here (and I am not 100% certain it is anywhere but the south) we eat black-eyed peas and greens for luck. I'll be going to my parents' in a while to eat them, plus my mom decided to pay ode to her ancestry and cook some Greek food. She's never done that before, so we'll see how that went.

My mom always said whatever you are doing at midnight on New Year's Eve is what you'll be doing for the rest of the year. My husband and I used to use that time wisely , but this year he and my youngest son were on a hunting trip. My oldest son was at a party and my daughter and her husband were celebrating their first New Year's Eve together alone. So, here I was all alone, watching movies and listening to fireworks coming from the neighbor's house.

I hope it is a very good year for everyone!!!

here are a few to make the headache go away and the mind focus a bit clearer about making the world a better place, (some of you have probably already seen many of these, but they are good for a brightening laugh anyway ~~ Ignore the IDIOTS......

IDIOT SIGHTING:

We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a "large" enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, "Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower." I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, "NO, it's not." Four is larger than two.."

We haven't used Sears repair since.

IDIOT SIGHTING

My daughter and I went through the McDonald's take-out window and I gave the clerk a $5 bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her a quarter. She said, "you gave me too much money." I said, "Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar bill back." She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the quarter, and said "We're sorry but they could not do that kind of thing." The clerk then proceeded to give me back $1 and 75 cents in change.

Do not confuse the clerks at McD's.

IDIOT SIGHTING:

I live in a semi rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: "Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore."

From Kingman , KS

IDIOT SIGHTING IN FOOD SERVICE:

My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for "minimal lettuce." He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.

From Kansas City

IDIOT SIGHTING:

I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, "Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?" To which I replied, "If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?" He smiled knowingly and nodded, "That's why we ask."

Happened in Birmingham , Ala.

IDIOT SIGHTING:

The stoplight on the corner buzzes when it's safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine. She asked if I knew what the buzzer was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, "What on earth are blind people doing driving?!"

She was a probation officer in Wichita , KS

IDIOT SIGHTING:

At a good-bye luncheon for an old and dear coworker. She was leaving the company due to "downsizing." Our manager commented cheerfully, "This is fun. We should do this more often." Not another word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that deer-in-the-headlights stare.

This was a lunch at Texas Instruments.

IDIOT SIGHTING:

I work with an individual who plugged her power strip back into itself and for the sake of her life, couldn't understand why her system would not turn on.

A deputy with the Dallas County Sheriffs office, no less.

IDIOT SIGHTING :

When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the drivers side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. "Hey," I announced to the technician, "its open!" His reply, "I know. I already got that side."

This was at the Ford dealership in Canton , Mississippi

Gloria,

Before the alcohol we usually start of with coffee, cappuccinos and treats.
We don’t eat for good luck, but we do eat some traditional treats to celebrate the New Year. One of them is waffles. There is another treat I don’t know the English name for, if there even is one. Roughly translated they are called “oil spheres.” I must admit that it rather sounds disgusting when reading it in English. They are made of dough, raisons and apples, and all of that is fried in oil. The rest of the treats, like chocolates and sweets, is eaten all year long.

I must say that I rarely drink myself into a stupor, and this year I also managed to stop well in time and switch to juice.
Three of our guests didn’t however. We ended up with two bowls of a rather unpleasant liquid. Luckily none of the drunks became annoying. Although we have a large front door these particular guests found it very difficult to avoid the walls at both sides. They sort of bounced from left to right and back until they made it outside. There were some complaints that the sidewalk moved.

I did visit them later on: they appeared shaken but not stirred.

Lesson learned this year: always have a large bucket within reach.

We had guests for New Year's that just left, so I'm late in wishing all my Mindsight buddies the best for 2008.

We had waffles for breakfast yesterday (just a coinkydink) and I fixed Hoppin' John (black-eyed peas, rice and sausage with Creole seasoning) for our good luck dinner.

I usually kiss Tony at midnight on New Year's Eve, but I was mad at him this time because he interrupted the movie we were watching to see some idiot on TV jump a football field on a motorcycle as a tribute to Evel Knievel's death!

I hope everyone is blessed beyond belief in 2008.

Stephen and Tom, I am among those who lost her sense of adventure years ago where New Year's Eve is concerned. I prefer to get my allotted amount of sleep. The New Year can arrive without me.

So no parties. Each year on New Year's eve during our 40-plus years of marriage, I've fixed the traditional "good luck" supper -- fried cabbage and potatoes and a pan of cornbread. Where my husband was raised in Appalachia, that was the traditional meal so far be it from me to wander off the beaten track. My family comprised of Irish, English, and German ancestors, ate corned beef and cabbage but I never got into the habit of eating corned beef.

Happy New Year!!

Oil spheres sound like funnel cakes with extra stuff added in (raisins and apples).

We usually have egg nog at New Years' (and Christmas, and any day around the holidays where we feel like it)...sometimes we have oyster stew

Homemade eggnog only...can't be beat by the crap in the store.

2 eggs (or was that 1?), 1 quart of half-and-half, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 capful of almond extract and 1 capful of vanilla extract.

Yum yum... :-D

Oil spheres sound like apple fritters to me.

New Years Eve is amateur night, when millions of people who never drink throughout the year think they should try their hands at it. Too scary for us veterans.

My oldest daughter and I brought in the new year playing cribbage and rummy. I plan on teaching her gin-rummy next. We even created our own version of cribbage.

Hubby was playing computer games and the little kids were watching movies. The middle girl was out at a church youth group party, but came home early because we got hit with almost a foot of snow. Plus more on the 1st. Then more on the 2nd. Now, we're in a huge thaw with thunderstorms and flooding, more rain on the way. The river in my itty-bitty town is only an inch or two from overflowing the levees. Could get interesting.

Happy New Year, everyone!
