Has anyone heard from him lately or have a new e-mail address for him? I sent him a message that bounced. I'm worried about the old grouch.

I know Bill only by the exchanges we've had here, and by my book that means I don't really know him all that much. But I've wondered about him. Just a few minutes ago, I discovered that a William Nelson died this past September in San Antone. Our Bill, however, was still posting in November, and I don't think it was from the grave because I have it on good authority that there's no high-speed internet in the afterlife. But I've often wondered why Bill is Bill here, yet his books are authored by Richard Alan Nelson. And if you Google this name, you find that Richard Alan Nelson is a respected scholar in the communication field as well.

Also, where's Dennis?

Dennis is alive and well, I got an email from him the other day, He has now gone a year in his cancer treatment and is cancer free at this time. He will be attending the a murder writers conference in Chicago in February and he has two pitch sessions there. I am hoping for him to be able to get at least one offer out of it for his current work. He has certainly done enough sitting on panels and networking to get the notice that he deserves.

Anyway, just that update to let you all know he is OK and hanging in there. (Dennis, IF you are reading this, I just thought that I would update everyone here when Frank asked about you and you can fill in anything else that you might want to add, as there are several things, I am sure, that all of your friends here are curious about....) Plus I want everyone to add you to their list of good hopes and wishes for the pitch sessions.

I read the above posts and wondered myself. My e-mail came back, too. So I called him. Bill is alive and well. He moved recently and is in the process of changing e-mail accounts. He hopes to be back online soon. Right now, he said, he's enjoying life Internet free.

Hello All,
Joyce and others, thank you for your concern but I assure you I have never been better. We moved into our new house in mid-November and I have been more than busy. I've sodded a back yard and built a deck (12'x24') and that has been quite a chore(lost 8 pounds).
We put Donna on line, but I have a technical problem with my PC and a wireless router. I have put off resolving it because I am probably going to buy a laptop. I've sort of enjoyed the vacation from net-addiction. There is a life after the internet!
The writing has been put on hold, if not forever, but that seems to be okay.
I've got my power saws, a cold beer and a Lowe's about a mile away. What more could a guy want?
Besides, I'm not allowed to say nasty stuff to Frank and Harry, so what good is that?
By the way, Frank, the other Richard Alan Nelson is a noted educator and prof at LSU. He is much more learned that I and a lot older, about your age.
Harry, what will you guys in Europe do with all your spare time when Bush is gone? Are you counting the days?
Damn, that felt good!
When I get back on line (I'm presently on my wife's computer)I'll be back to haunt you.
Cheers,

Welcome back Bill.

Take care with your wireless router; I have seen what people can do with other people's wireless signals if you don't take precautions.

And you can always mail me any nasty stuff you are not allowed to say here.

And Bush, well he is not gone yet... Besides I don't think he was that important, and I really wonder what the next shift will do. And he still might declare a state of emergency and stay on? (pull a 'false flag' on Iran.)
In fact it would be nice if he stayed a few years to clean up the mess...

Hey Bill,

Good to hear from you. I can appreciate the deck building. Did one myself a couple of years back and it does take off a few pounds, which allows for a few more beers. I go to Lowe's a lot. That's where I'm learning my Spanish. Maybe we can try it out on each other. Banos. Pintura. El mundo Herriamientos. Cuidado.

As for the Bush stuff, I look forward to the day when the word will come to mind mostly when I remember Ladybird Johnson who wanted everyone to "plant a tree, a shrub, and a boosh."

Unlike Harry, I don't want you to send me any nasty stuff. Send it to the corporations. They're the ones that deserve it. More than ever!

Anyway, sounds like you're enjoying life, and that's what really counts.

Hey, Bill! Since I knew you'd moved into your new house, I wouldn't have been worried about your absence if my e-mail hadn't bounced. Then I suddenly realized I missed getting your completely inaccurate (and often misspelled) insults and wanted you back!

As for Harry counting days, there's a calendar for doing just that here. I bought a copy, but mostly it's because I have an appointment at a conference I'm going to in April with the editor from Sourcebooks who wrote it. I'm going to ask her to autograph it. Pretty good suck-up idea, huh?

Oh, and since you didn't get my message about it, don't forget to go here and vote for my story in the Preditors & Editors poll. And vote for Todd's story in the SF category while you're there!

Welcome back Bill. Hope the deck and spanish lessons go well. I too just went through the process of building a deck, but in reading your post realized that I went about it all wrong. I had no beer to aid the process (my wife won't let me drink while using power tools).

Bill - Those of us in the know are aware that Mardi Gras, which started this week in N'walins, Galveston, and elsewhere, started first in Mobile. Not just this year (though it did), but for all time. Some 300 years ago. Joyce will tell you...she was there.

Bill, are you still president of the Texas Hair Club for Men? You know I have a special place in my heart for bald people.

Tom is right about Mardi Gras. New Orleans did a sad imitation of Mobile's carnival even before Katrina. They don't even throw candy or moonpies at their parades--sheesh! We also exclusively have Joe Cain Day on the Sunday before Fat Tuesday to commemorate Joe's revival of Mardi Gras in Mobile after the Civil War. Tom, didn't you interview Joe after he paraded as Chief Slacabamorinico?

Harry, I'm not a spanker. Go to your room and write a 1000-word essay.

Joycie,
You have no idea. My skin kept growing into the areas where hair previously grew so, about a year ago, I shaved it all off. I am a skin-head and love it. I will never make any futile efforts to re-grow the stuff again. It is total freedom. I'll admit it took a little getting used to, but now it's cool.
It did make me go blind. My hat keeps falling over my eyes and I can't see where I'm going, but I'm not going anywhere anyway,so...
If you like bald, you must love me. Admit it...you do...

At least she didn't add the caveat of having to edit it down to a 500-word essay after you were done...

Oh hell, Todd. That's a given.

So, Harry, remember to "pad" the essay at the outset. Don't write "A young married couple." Instead, write "A young man and woman who were married..."
