Yesterday I saw something on TV that surprised me quite a bit. As you know,Mexicans often try to cross the border and make it into the USA. Some Americans took it upon themselves to grab some weapons and go and patrol the borders to help the police. One of those people told the reporter that not only Mexicans tried to cross the borders there, but also Vietnamese, Koreans end even Belgiums! I really can’t imagine why Belgiums should try to cross the border between Mexico and the USA? The reporter could not find any sensible answers.
Anyone?

Harry, There must be some nutty reason for that particular group. A Belgian could come in through Canada just as easy. Both our borders are like sieves. Don't get me started. Yes, I favor closed borders! bn |

I’m pretty convinced that any Belgium can enter the USA by plane straight from Brussels, just like I did straight from Amsterdam some years ago. I really can’t think of any reason for a Belgium to try to enter the USA from Mexico OR Canada except for touristic reasons. I started my trip in Canada and traveled to California without the need to sneak across any borders. After that I happily traveled back home. I suppose that this self-made borderpatrol might have caught some tourists that wanted to see the “Mexican crossing” themselves? (indeed just a barbed wire at some places) I can imagine that the USA doesn’t want any illegal immigrants, but closing the borders would mean that legal immigrants can’t come in anymore. Isn’t America a typical immigrant’s country?

Can't remember the author's name but a few years back there was a book titled "Lines and Shadows," that told a story about a particular hot spot along the Mexican border near San Isidro, CA. Hundreds of illegals crossed every night in search of below minimum wage jobs in the US. The story was mainly about the gangs of Mexican bandits who roamed this desolate area preying on the "pollo's" that were sneaking across the border. At one time I lived in Mexico on assignment to help train a work force to start up a new engine plant for GM. I was there for year and had ample opportunity to get to know the locals and talked with them daily. It is terribly depressing to see a country with vast natural resources and an intelligent and hard working population, devastated by unecessary poverty. Their land is fertile and the climate allows as many as three different crops to be grown in the same field in one season... And they're working the land with a team of mules... It's the government, greedy and corrupt that's the problem. If there was ever a country ripe for revolution, it's Mexico. Only time will tell if the new government will make a difference. At least they've broken the grip of the PRI (Party of the Revolution) who have been in power since the days of Pancho Villa. |

Maybe the Belgians were fugitives or hopeful drug dealers? America WAS a country of opportunity once, the land of opportunity. It WAS a fertile pristine place - once - as Dennis says Mexico is today. I am as far from a racist as any person can be, but I have very strong opinions about immigration today. Any country that cannot and will not proovide tax payer funded service to its own people - education and Medicare for example - has no business providing those services to immigrants - legal or otherwise. And any ethnic group screaming about discrimination whether German, African, Mexican, Arab, etc etc descent should be provided a one way ticket back to the land of their ancestors. See how they like having their rights trampled in another country for awhile. I know mine is probably not a popular stance, but in my opinion "Give me your tired, your weary" now applies more to long term tax paying citizens more than it does immigrants. It isn't only Mexico that can thank greedy politicians and big business for the state they're in. The US is now on the same path. OK I will crawl into my hole now. |

Laurel, You're 100% correct. Harry, No. "Closed" borders may be too strict a term. Any "Legal" foreigner should be welcomed with open arms. It's the illegals (major and minor) that upset me. Yes, I've heard the stories of how America would fail without them. Who would work the crops? Not you or me. True, but they would be worked by essentially the same people, only they would be registered and be here under and subject to the law and the process of going and coming could be regulated. MY GOD, I sound like Frank! I'm a closet Nazi!!! Oh, my God. bn |

I think the same as you do Laurel on this particular subject. So you are not alone in your (ours) unpopular opinion. I used to work in Los Angeles, and watched as many people from different nations that had fallen under hard rule in their homeland, like VietNam and Korea and Thialand and especially Mexico, all came here and when they stepped off the boat or crossed under the barbed wire border, got handed a check for $10,000 and a welfare card so they could get medical help, then access to schools to teach them and their kids how to write and speak english so that they could get into school and jobs, and a deed to a small innercity house. They went to school, learned the language, but never wrote it or spoke it, except where it was absolutely necessary, took the deed and filled the house with all of their relatives, sleeping on the floor and all working and no one paying anything towards utilities, and using candles and such till bed time, took the kids and all the families to the doctors and had complete medical and dental and vision care for all of them, (while I could not afford to have the same done for myself or my daughter and I was working a full time, good job in the 70's). They took the food stamps and bought food and goods and what they could not buy from the food stamps, they traded for. The took the check and bought up little stores, and cleaners and gas stations and small little dive drive-ins, and started charging the customers (white american citizens) there outrageous money for the goods that they sold, not bargains, (believe me), stuck the kids in schools, and then learned all about the system and started crying racial discrimination and foul and wanting everything to be changed so that their kids could pray and eat and read and not salute the flag in our own language and schools, then they did the same at all the places that they do business and all the county agencies, so those new jobs at the county agencies and businesses went to people of those ethnicity's (sp?) and not the people that were safely securely employed in those jobs beforehand. Took that deed and built little innercity villages and filled the whole place up with others from that village of long ago from their homeland, and reaped the whole of what they got from our American government and then they scourned us and mocked us, and refused to meld into our society and become one with all the others that had done the same before them, and then they wonder why no one wants our borders open?????? And to top off all of the above, they send that check that they get every week or two back to the homeland so that others can get enough money to come over here, and they keep on doing that until the whole family is here and then they start bringing the friends over!!! The money they earn almost never filters back into our economy for goods and services, as they trade much for what they need from each other. I watched that happen far too many yaers in California, in person, with my eyes open wide-shut. And I am NOT BIGOTED OR RACIAL AT ALL, however I wonder why they get all that when I have worked all my life since I was 15 years old and was never handed a deed or $10,000 to buy or start a business and never got a welfare check given to me so that I could have my babies get free medical care and on and on, right down the line. I struggled and worked sometimes two or more jobs to maintain, and never had any help from outside, and today, when I need it, can't get enough money on disability to live decently, although I worked long hard years and earned good pay, my benefits are not what a man's would be, because I was not supposed to be the breadwinner in my family and earned significantly less than a would be husband would have earned at the same jobs, and my medical care is possibly going to become non-existent because of the stretched need for all types of services to those that cross our borders illegally and some even legally and get all of the above mentioned items and services that I and all other tax paying citizens are not even entitled to. And people wonder why there are those here that laugh at the system and feel that the whole thing is preposterous, and why should they pay taxes into a system that only provides for people who wont put anything back into that same system. People who take the check and send it elsewhere, people who would live in subsidized housing and never pay rent or taxes for that housing or for the schools that they send their kids to and then never learn the language. It is all sort of a huge slap in the face of America, and people wonder why we are thinking about closing our borders....... have they looked around lately? I like to go to new cultures and see and do the things that they do there (IF I would ever have the money to do so, IF I could ever get enough ahead of the game to be able to afford the trips). I like to learn some of the language when I am there, and speak with my very rustic tongue for goods and services, although I never pretend to be good at it, IF I were to live there longer than to just visit, I most certainly would be able to be proficient at the language. I would get my job, and pay my way, and pay into the tax system, and buy my food and and take care of my medical needs in their tongue rather than mine, because that is what they would use. In other words, I would try to fit into their culture rather than bring mine there. To me that just seems decent. However, often that is not the case with immigrants nowdays that come here. Mostly, what is done today, is that they want everything to be done for them in their language and for their purposeful needs to be gained rather than to put anything back to where the money is coming from. The system has turned against the very people that designed it so that many could and would feel like they were wanted. We opened our arms and took in the poor, the misbegotten, and they turned it into a vile thing against us, and are making us pay for them and this countries dreams through our own diminishing of our country and its ideals. Oh, and they love our colleges, and educate their kids on scholarships and then send them back to the old country to do over there, again, never returning the education or services here. Makes one want to be a foreigner... or something. I do sound bigoted in this, but really I am not, I am just stating the facts as I have seen them and seen my friends and family have to get used to and buy those facts. California has turned into something that it never was supposed to be because of the tax burden that it had layered upon itself to take care of people who wont put anything back into the system there, but continually take from it. Nevada isn't far behind, right now...... and most of it is from migrants who won't give back anything, and do the same scenario and story as I outlined above. It goes on daily. I used to work in the pawn shops, and we would cash paychecks from the legal and illegal workers that work in the casinos and laborers in construction jobs, and the first thing that they would always want is a money order to send MOST of the pay back to Mexico or wherever.... via Western Union. "MY GOD, I sound like Frank! I'm a closet Nazi!!!" San Antone Billy, you are a bozo! Is there anything in that pathetic mind of yours that is ever understandably straight and not a super jumble? I'm the liberal, remember? You've said so yourself on numerous occasions. Well, on the political continuum left is liberal and that's where the commies come in. On the right are the conservatives like yourself and that's where the Nazis and other fascists hang out. I'm beginning to get a real handle on your thought processes, Bill. The title of your book Hiding Places really means Out in the Open, doesn't it?

Here in Nebraska it is the meat packing industry that utilizes illegals from Mexico. No one wants to work in that messy job any more than we want to work long hours picking vegetables. I suppose the illegal aliens here eventually get a green card, but in the interim they receive every perk and benny the US of A has to offer for them and their extended families. My husband used to laugh when we watched Archie Bunker because he said I was a "commie, pinko, bleeding heart liberal" like Meathead. However, I don't fit that description where illegal aliens of any color or nationality are concerned. |
