I went to my daughter's softball game tonight. Now, as adults, we all know that people make mistakes. And there are always a couple of bad calls in every game. Such is life. Live with it. The girls on the field were doing just that. They just shook it off and kept right on playing. The parents, on the other hand, were unbelievable! I have seen 2 year olds who wouldn't behave so badly. The parents were screaming obscenities (though only a few, but a few is too many in that setting), harrassing the refs, and just wouldn't stop. The other team was winning, but they and the coach, after the 3rd inning, chose to forfeit the game to get their girls away from the hideous behavior of these adults. I have never been so embarrassed at a ball game before. LA LaurieAnne

LA, I coached Little League for several years. I could tell you parent stories until daylight! Once, after a game, I had one of the daddys by the neck and pushed up against a CocaCola machine. We set a fine example for the kids. Many is the game ruined for the kids by parents. bn |

I had my son in little league for (I think) two games. The yelling and cussing by the parents absolutely floored me. Also the coaches were yelling at the kids and making them run bases for dropping balls or not getting in front of grounders the coaches hit to them in practice. The kicker was that these were 4 year olds and it was T-ball. I pulled him out during a practice session after I told the head coach if he ever got in my kid's face and yelled like that at him again I would shove a bat up his ass. And actually, I think I would have given it a shot. Jeeezzzeeee Sheila |

Girl, not to steal a thread, but email me your phone number. I have been so busy - my mom fell and broke a hip - lots of back and forth to the boonies of central Texas. 4 hours. And the only way you can get there is drive. (or slide on your ass, as she was always fond of saying until the dementia set in...) I have been wanting to talk to you on the phone, but don't have your number. I'm back in Houston for a while - so I should be able to get your email. Talk to you soon! Sheila |

Sheila, I hope that where she was sliding on her ass was wet with mud and downhill all the way.... otherwise it would be a really rough trip. I am sorry about her breaking her hip, and the recovery is a very long one on that kind of situation. You will be stressed to the max shortly, if you aren't already. Tell her hello from your internet friends and tell her that we are pulling for her speedy recovery. Sent you that email. Claudia |

I remember that when one of my sons played little league there was one parent who loudly criticized every call that was made on the field. His son was the undisputed star of the team, a 12 year old pitcher with the wind-up and delivery of a pro. His dad just wouldn't stay off of him, screaming at him and publicly humiliating him. He even pulled him off the bench between innings and worked him out in the bullpen. Nobody ever stood up to this abusive parent because he was... United States Senator Carl Levin |

As the wife of an umpire as well as the best softball coach in the world, and as the mother of a 10-year-old pitcher in fast-pitch softball, I've seen everything described here and more. Umpires should not tolerate ANY profanity from the fans and should make them leave the park. Their team forfeits if they refuse. Also, my husband makes it clear to the parents of his players at the first practice that they are not to interfere with their child's performance in the game--he is the coach and the players are to listen only to him. If the parents have a problem with it, they are welcome to put their child on another team. He has strict rules, but they apply to EVERYONE. He works his players hard, but he works hard right along with them, and although they can count on being told about their mistakes, they know they will also be congratulated enthusiastically for their successes.
