Today, November 11, 2005, the United States Postal Service fired seven letter carriers in St. Petersburg, Florida, for not delivering junk mail to customers who had specifically requested that the letter carriers no longer litter their mailboxes with unsolicited matter. It should be noted that your first class postage (now 37 cents per ounce but soon to be raised to 39 cents) is used to support reduced third class/bulk rates for businesses. In other words, every time you purchase a stamp, part of the money goes to finance those mass mailings they stuff in your mailbox. http://www.fdungan.com/usps1.htm |

I have a slightly different technique, since we help support all that junk mail. When I get a postage paid envelope with that junk mail, I send back to them an ad to buy my books. The Grass Dance The Alley of Wishes Color of Laughter, Color of Tears My Name is Esther Clara - coming soon

I've done the same thing, Laurel, on occasions. On other occasions, I switch the contents of one junker to the envelope of another. What I really would like to see all across the country is a grassroots initiative where neighborhoods install a barrel right next to mailboxes that are on the street and the junk mail is immediately deposited in such barrel. While spam in one's e-mail is a pain, this tangible crap is much worse, as it requires real physical effort and gasoline to get rid of it. At least once I month I lug a container weighing probably 50-75 pounds from the house to the car and later from the car to the recycling bins, 20 miles away. I'm sure many others do the same. One could shred it all, and let cats use it for their business... ;-) Mindsight Moderator Check out Who Needs a Hero?

Actually, any bulk mail that is not delivered is thrown in a special dumpster at the station and sent to a recycling plant. That's why it's such a shame that these letter carriers were fired. Not only did they comply with their customers' wishes, they also recycled the offending matter which, when sold to a recycler, helped to reduce the price we pay for stamps and related services. To my mind, as well as that of many other former postal workers, the St. Petersburg 7 are true heroes who stood up to the bureaucracy and did what needed to be done. Please dial 1-800-275-USPS or your Congress person and let them know that it's your mailbox, located on your property, and you would appreciate it if they didn't stuff junk mail into it. http://www.fdungan.com/usps1.htm |
