My wife and I just sent our last check off (on-line, like I'd really use the post offense) for her student loans. That was the last debt besides the house. A huge turn around from 2 yrs ago.

Congratulations! This country is choking on debt. Thank goodness there are still some of us who exercise fiscal responsibility.

In that case, you must be rolling in dough! Could we discuss a loan to pay my bills?
Remember, prosperity is the period between the last payment on one thing and the first payment on the next!

Congratulations...

Indeed, getting out of debt may require a lot of belt-tightening and saying 'no' to things you really want to have, but it's well worth the effort to be debt-free and financially independent.

In about a week, our house will be the only debt we have left. We've come up with a way to pay it completely off in 10 years (and I hope to do it sooner...but there are some things my wife won't do without...).

I'm on your wife's side. (I'm no fool...I go with the winner.) Too much self-restraint can be bad for you. In 2006 I am resolving to drink more (booze). Not daily...annually. In 2005 I went completely without for several months. Nothing alcoholic. Of course, the beverage industry fell on hard times. I was tortured by thoughts of those poor distillery workers who couldn't support their families. Also, family and friends would tiptoe around me, drinking iced tea, hoping I would leave so they could get out the beer. So I took it up again, and I feel much better.

Bill
"Could we discuss a loan to pay my bills?"

Sorry Bill, now it's time to work on the kids going to college and retirement, then there are some house repairs (new stove, counters, back patio, re-painting), a market-study, and eventually buying twenty acres next near.

Despite the naysayers, the American Dream is still very much alive. It is hope that keeps us going.
