Actually, I prefer Fathers Day, but Harry is welcome to celebrate whichever day he chooses to celebrate. Why don't we just combine them the way we did with President Day and call it Parents Day?

With so many single parents, it makes sense to make the holiday non-gender specific. When I suggested it to the agency that provides me with caretakers (a nationwide healthcare provider that gives their employees Mothers Day off and makes them work on Fathers Day), they attempted to buy me off by giving me an added day of care free of charge (which, being an impoverished writer on a fixed income, I gratefully took).

I'm surprised. I thought we idealists were contemptuous of crass commercialism. Mothers Day was invented by the nation's retailers. It succeeded beyond their wildest dreams because mothers know how to make us feel guilty (and like presents). Fathers Day was an afterthought, and never quite made it. Dads aren't into guilt much. Besides, they usually wind up paying for their own gifts (allowances, credit cards, household accounts, etc.).

The threat is unveiled and it is truly every bit as ugly as it was perceived to be. Since I have already forfeited my knee, I might as well point out that along with rights come responsibilities. In the current state of affairs, Dads get the shit end of the stick.

I completely agree, Fred. Along with rights does come responsibility. Unfortunately, there are always those who, for whatever reason, refuse to accept any. And, like it or not, more likely than not, (when it comes raising a child) it's a 'dad'. Perhaps men don't GET the shit end of the stick so much as they chose it.

...volley to you...

Fred,
Are you nuts? Did you notice the title was HAPPY Mother's Day, not
MAD Mother's day?
You're going to lose more than you knees here...

My wife abandoned us (after we starved to put her through nursing school) when my son was 7. She is not a bad woman, just selfish and self-centered. As a single father who raised a son who graduated from West Point and the UCLA school of Law, I resent Shiela's snide insinuation that Dads don't give a damn. Our son is a decorated veteran of two wars (same as my father). My ex is just as proud of him as I am. The best part is that she is (somewhat belatedly) getting back in his good graces. Making mistakes is not something that is gender specific. The important thing is to accept responsibility and learn from your mistakes.

I asked if anybody had anything against combining Mothers and Fathers Day into Parents Day. It seems the two days are not of equal importance to some members of this forum.

My mother's dead and we have no children, so Mother's Day usually just passes by like any other Sunday...

Having witnessed certain members of my wife's family in action, I can honestly say that Fred's right in saying that it's not only the dads that are shirking responsibility. It's more a matter of personality (being self-centered and such), which is often a gender-neutral disorder.

I think there are just way too many holidays that make women look like all we want are diamonds and other extravagant crap. The words "money grubbing whore" rings a bell as something I may have said a time or two. Every single "holiday" we are bombarded with commercials of men giving their women jewelry and other ridiculously priced gifts.

It's all just a racket to make women think they deserve material things for doing what it is their job to do.

I did have a happy Mother's Day, though. We spent it at the beach with my mom's family, picnicking, playing volleyball (if you could call it that) and talking. Surrounded by kids and husbands...the things that make it all worthwhile.

I've been a single parent twice, widowed once and divorced once. I raised four out of my six children alone and so I know all about responsibility.

My youngest is now 23 years old and on his own. For the first time in forty-four years I am now responsible for nobody but myself (and the dogs of course) but responsibility drills itself so deeply into your soul that you can't escape it. You still remain dependable and reliable. Lord knows I've done my best to become a bum but it just isn't working.

One of the most memorable days in my life was a Father's Day. My (only)daughter called me up and invited me and my youngest son (12 yrs old at the time) to meet her for a day at the Detroit Zoo. She gave me specific instructions about which parking lot to use and exactly where and when to be there.

My daughter showed up with her husband and four kids and I should have smelled a rat when she suggested we sit and chat for a few moments before going into the park. It was 8:30AM and already 88 degrees outside. The next thing I knew my oldest son and his family pulled in followed by my next oldest son and his wife and kids. Within a few minutes my other two sons showed up and so all of my kids and all of my grandchildren were there. Finally my sister arrived with a huge picnic lunch and a little red wagon to transport it in.

The temperature settled into the mid-90's and we roasted as we walked from one exhibit to the next slurping Italian Ice as we walked. We stopped in front of the picturesque "Scott Fountain" in the center of the park and took a tribal photo. There are eighteen people in that picture and fourteen of them are my direct descendants.

Ship them to Mexico in exchange for the ones we got from them.
Now there's a plan!

I rather have my kids make me a nice drawing or something, instead of getting presents bought in the shop.
It does result in drawers full of paper and cardboard stuff, and pieces of wood with nails sticking out of it, but I can't get myself to throw it away.

I don't understand why mothers should buy something for their husbands, or why fathers should buy something for their wife at fathers/mothers day?

The same reason you buy them a gift on their birthday, Harry. It's THEIR day and you are honoring them.
Would your children give your mother a present on Mother's Day? Why? She's not their mother.Sheessseee, Harry, you just don't understand anything.

No they don't. I do.
