Have you ever seen what happens at Arlington at Christmas time? This is not you tax dollars at work. These are donated by one man. He even covers the expense of trucking them from his hometown in Harrington Maine.

Thanks for sharing the photograph. Arlington National Cemetary is located on the former estate of General Robert E. Lee's wife, Mary. I took my son there when he was very young. http://www.fdungan.com/son.htm |

Thanks, Dennis, Nice pic. When I went there,I was overwhelmed with the impact of the place. One can't look at that, understand what it represents, and not be grateful for what we share in this great nation. God bless them all. |

I would hope that those men and women who gave their lives for this country will somehow know that it wasn't in vain and that we all respect them just as much today as we have in the past, no matter what the rest of the world thinks about our wars and our ways of doing whatever it is that our me/women have been called to do and when. That picture shows that we, or at least that one man, do. I do, even though I have never seen Arlington. I would like to walk on that ground for a few minutes to feel the energy coming from all those lives. I can imagine that it would be stupendous. Thanks Dennis, it is a beautiful picture. I don't know very much about the wreath donor except that it's the man who owns the company that makes the wreaths. It has to be quite an expensive gesture and I would guess that it could end when this patriotic and generous man dies. I'm just wondering where he'll be buried. Arlington? I can't believe that congress wouldn't make an exception for a man like this. If he's the sort of person that he appears to be, he might not consider himself worthy of being buried among heroes. Claudia: “(…) no matter what the rest of the world thinks about our wars and our ways of doing whatever it is that our me/women have been called to do and when.” Criticism at one war doesn’t automatically means criticism at ALL sides in any war, and certainly not at ALL men/woman who fought in ALL wars. Just wanted to point that out. I visited the Margaraten US Memorial Cemetery with my children last year, and certainly not to trample on the graves. I think it is excellent that there is a person who honors the fallen in such a way as in Arlington. There is never anything wrong with honoring the fallen, but also honor them by making sure that nobody falls in vain, or for the wrong reason in the future. |

But Harry, who decides that it is in vain or for the wrong reasons? Depending on which "side" you are fighting, your reasons are "wrong" to the other side. And I would suppose all soldiers who lose their lives on the losing side lose them in vain...for a lost cause. I think that when you are willing to sacrifice your life for your country, you are at least in title to know the real reasons, and do not deserve to be lied to. That goes for the soldiers at ALL sides. |

Gloria, I forgot to mention something, that "in vain" bit was in response to Claudia's: "I would hope that those men and women who gave their lives for this country will somehow know that it wasn't in vain and that we all respect them just as much today as we have in the past, (...)" Perhaps it is indeed in vain when you die and your country loses the war. But there sometimes is no other way. You don't know if somebody died in vain until the war is over. |
