A while ago a friend of my wife's from work, her husband got out of the computer building business. He had lot's of extra parts and basically threw them into one computer and we ended up with it. The only catch is when we plug everything in and turn it on all we get on the monitor is a blinking cursor. I kindof assume that means there is no operating system for it to load up like Windows. Am I right here? My computer skills start after everything works.

Thanks for any responses I might get before I get them.

take the cover off and make sure the hard drive has the three hole plug in the power slot of the hard drive. and check to see if the big multiwired cable (ribbon looking) is plugged into the hard drive and well seated and the other end is in the slot on the pc motherboard and well seated. -- if those two things check out - the hard drive will have a light hum when computer is turned on (check with the cover off) - at the blicking curor type C:\dir -- this will tell you if anything is on the hard drive.

Set it on the floor, then kick it very hard.
If that doesn't work, I'm stumped.

I think that your operating system is not in there, like you said, (Windows), but be sure to check all the things the way PAC said before you get all panicky.

Sounds like an operating system lack or not being plugged into the proper place or something like that.

What exactly do you mean by a "blinking cursor"?

When you start up, does it come up with anything BEFORE the blinking cursor?
If not, I'd say you might also be missing your BIOS. I'm not familiar enough with a system's BIOS to know how to fix that sort of problem, but hopefully CE will venture around here in the coming days to help...
