A while back I reviewed a book titled "Relative Danger" from Poisoned Pen Press. Recently the same publisher released a completely new book from a different author also titled, "Relative Danger." I've noticed a few other examples of titles being repeated by different authors. (Paint it Black) This leads me to believe that titles sort of fall under the "Public Domain" category. My next book will be titled... "The Godfather." Dennis Collins Moderator www.theunrealmccoy.com http://theunrealmccoy.blogspot.com |

That's a good idea, Dennis. I think I'll come out with "Holy Bible." We're on to something here. |

You can't copyright a title, but you may not be able to convince a publisher to let you use one with "baggage." ~Joyce Sterling Scarbrough True Blue Forever ISBN 0-9722385-9-X Different Roads ISBN 0-9722385-3-0 http://www.authorsinkbooks.com Read the first chapters at http://www.authorsden.com/joycelscarbrough1 Waste time on Joyce's Blog http://joycescarbrough.blogspot.com Senior Editor Champagne Books http://www.champagnebooks.com |

Bill... I'd be careful about using the word "Bible" in a title. If the Al Queda don't get ya, the ACLU will! Dennis Collins Moderator www.theunrealmccoy.com http://theunrealmccoy.blogspot.com |

I'm going to use "True Red Forever." It'll be about a red-neck in the South. I am actually writing a play now called "Altering Artie" about a red-neck who's wife forces him to get a vasectomy. Artie ain't happy! |

Dennis, are you sure? Robert is one of the most careful guys I know. I looked on his website and only found the one title in tpb, hard cover and large type. |

Ah. Yes, that makes a difference. Joyce is correct; you can't copyright a title. If there's a manuscript that I'm interested in purchasing the rights to, I normally do a search of the title to see what the competition is. If too many titles pop up, like with "Relative Danger," I'll usually talk to the author about altering the title so that it'll pop out in an Amazon.com/B&N.com title search. Nothing worse than having fifteen other books with your same title. It's a drag for the customer to scroll around looking for the right one. |

"Joyce is correct" Please don't ever say that again! It just adds to the problem. |

I think JT is not always right, but is always correct! I'll put my money on her opinion (most of the time.) Except maybe when I'm right, which is all the time!
