Last Sunday when I was on my way home from Pittsburgh there was a Bald Eagle sitting on a branch of an Oak tree right by the side of the Ohio Turnpike. He was really close to the road just watching traffic breeze by.

Today I was coming home from northern Michigan and was just about at the 45th parallel when a huge Bald Eagle flew directly over me, not 40 ft. in the air.

It's sure exhilarating to see our national bird in the wild. They used to be so rare.

Oh yeah, and the Michigan DNR is monitoring a family of Wolverines just a few miles from my house. They were thought to be non-existent in Michigan any more. All of our wild game population is growing, even the moose population has passed the 2500 mark and my fiance has otters in the pond behind her house.

I'm sure you have heard of Myrtle Beach (big bike rally). Maybe you're heard of Santee-Cooper (middle of South Carolina) huge lakes with the best large-mouth bass fishing in the country.

A few years back, we rented a cabin at the state park. My son and I went out to the middle of the lake, used to be a big hill,now it is a lot of old dead trees. A flock of Bald Eagles make nests in the trees. They must love the fishing and the privacy a mile from shore in every direction.

As we neared the trees we were attacked by the swooping eagles getting too close to their nests and young. In a heartbeat, we turned the boat, opened the engine and got the heck out of there.

It's one thing to admire the size and beauty of those great birds but quite another when they dive-bomb you with those talons.

I had two cardinals in a tree in the back this evening.
Does that count?

I'm betting what Dennis saw was buzzards. When they see a guy on a motorcycle they know a meal can't be far away! They were just following you, waiting!

we have Bald and Golden Eagles here in the early spring and mid to late winter after birthing season for the cows. They eat the afterbirth from the mother cows. They circle overhead whenever a cow is near that is pregnant and wait for her to drop her calf and then her afterbirth. Then they swoop in and have a meal. They stay up in the rock outcroppings on White Range and sit up there waiting. You can see them from the road perched on the rocks. They are really big and majestic looking, and you can always tell one in the sky cause of the wing span. It is huge.

There are a lot more here also, both Goldens and Baldies. I took a picture of a hawk that was perched in my olive tree about 5 feet from my kitchen window. If I could figure how to get it down to a smaller size to show here, I would post it. It is a really pretty white/brown medium sized hawk.

My favorite animal has always been the wolverine. In school I would write a report on them every chance I got which translates to about five over ten years including college.

A friend of mine in the dorms was our bow hunting in Idaho with a couple friends a while back. They were triangulating their positions and he was about to where he needed to be when he broke out of the brush and onto a path. He heard a bark to one side and saw a cub wolverine, then a growl behind him drew his attention. He had come out between a momma wolverine and her cub. He took off running for his truck, yelling into his walkie-talkie. He was the last one to it and it was rolling as he jumped into the bed. The wolverine was right behind him the whole way and even chased the truck til they got it in secind. Over the next three years he never went back to that mountain.

I don't understand what you mean when you say a meal can't be far away. I always avoid running over small animals that scurry across the road in front of me. (unless they're cats.)

I killed a stupid squirrel yesterday. I was driving in the neighborhood - 20 miles an hour - squirrel ran out in the street straight at me. I came to a complete stop. Waited for at least 30 seconds...didn't see him...so I started up cautiously......and heard the crunch. Looked in the rear view mirror and saw him flattened on the street. Ruined my whole day.

Senor squirrel probably did it for the insurance money. Don't be surprised if the court orders you to take care of his dependents until they come of age. Calling the squirrel stupid can only make it worse. Squirrel slander committed during an act of involuntary squirrel slaughter should be good for 6 months in the slammer plus a hefty fine.
