Wife and I went down to Lodi (between Stockton and Sacramento) California to look for a house to rent when we move down there. Just before we left we found out the house we were mainly going down to look at had pushed back its availability so it wouldn't be ready until August, we need it in June. So we did the whole panic, where are we going to stay cause we couldn't find anything that fit our needs via internet. Fortunately we got hooked into a good property management company that put together about five places that fit our needs and, while we had budgeted in for two days of looking for a place to live, we found what we needed in abou the first three hours.

We had enough time to drive around and look at house to buy once the one up here closes. Found two real strong contenders. We put an offer in one one, their counter offer was a joke so now we are waiting for their response on our best offer, take it or pay another month morgage. If this house doesn't work out wifey found a developed community with new houses going in that she really likes and is literaly three blocks from the elementery school (which apparently I need to attend to learn to spell again. The trade off is yard size and nearness to shopping. The first house is a ten-fifteen minute walk to grocery, 30 min to target and such, vs. 45min walk to grocery and 1hour to target and such. Those times will be cut down since I will be useing my bike as much as possible. The first house is also about 5300 sqft yard wise and the second is only about 4900 (this is coming from a 10K+ sqft yard right now.

The move date was moved up since, technically we have the rental starting june 1st. We will be moving June 18th. Wife will be in DC and then New York that week so I get to move with three kids, a dog, cat, fish and who knows how many plants but it is a rare opportunity for My wife to make it to New York. Any of you in or about New York?

Anyway I will keep you posted on all the moving fun, if you care.

of course we care about where you are going, Kevin. I am glad that you found something, indeed, two something's, so easily and that you will be getting down here so quickly. The work and loss of her help during the move will be hard on you, but you will rise to the occasion, literally. It will be good for you. Remember the song, Stuck in Lodi Again...... it really is a nice place. Too bad that you can't join her in New York. But you will be moved when she comes back and that will be a reason to be happy. Good luck in your journey.

We now have an offer in on our house (contingent on the sale of their house in Wisconsin). we are going ahead with the open house tomorrow (because it is too late to stop it) and we will see if a better offer comes in. For the house we are buying it took more than a week and a half of back and forth. Our house offer, counter offer and acceptance were all achieved in one day. Much easier.

Just FYI

I'm glad that things are going well and that you have that offer. Take care and go slow, so as not to make mistakes....

how soon to finished homes are these units? Will you be able to move in when you need to for the moving down from Oregon???? Nice homes, who is FCB? A very long time ago, in fact, 1962, in Fresno, CA, I used to work for Bonnadelle Homes and my father worked for Oscar Spano, which are two of the oldest home builders in the Central Valley.

It seems to me that most houses in the US have a wooden frame? I suppose you also put wood on the outside en inside, with insulation inbetween?

The house won't be finished until Sept 1st so we will have two+ months in a rental. FCB is a local, central valley builder so they take their reputation very seriously and build good homes, My parents have been dealing with a national builder who's next project is back East and it is difficult to get any answers from them.

Yes, a lot of homes over here are built with wood, especially in California. I suspect you are thinking more along the lines of brick sturctures? Over here, brick houses would be dangerous in an Earthquake. I have seen some higher end homes are moving to steel frames which are obviously much stronger.

Harry,

I think most often on a wooden house here are wood on the outside and sheetrock on the inside with insulation between.

In Florida, I would say yes, most houses being built are that type of house.

Most all homes here have wooden frames, even if they appear to be brick on the outside.

Floors vary with some people opting for cement and some for wood.

Wood framing, cement slab, brick exterior around here. In the Hill Country a lot of stone exterior, since natural stone abounds and stone-cutters are plentiful.

I suppose it indeed depends on the area you live in.

Where I live almost all houses are indeed double brick walls, sometimes insulation between the walls, and usually concrete floors. It can be very humid and rainy here, so wood on the outside needs lots of maintenance.
There are rarly earthquakes here, only minor ones every now and than. (Whenever I had beans for diner.)

In scandinavia the houses are mostly wood, also quite a few log houses.

I like the inside of such log houses, so I am making wooden walls inside my brick house to get that scandinavian atmosphere. (Without the maintenance at the outside, I'm way too lazy for that.)

In my area it seems like the modular business is taking over. We've sent all of our industry to Japan and nobody can afford a real house any more. We're moving toward paper houses.

We just signed papers to build a house and it's mostly wood and masonry. To my knowledge, there is no paper used in its manufacture. Some stone and plastic maybe.
You are certainly right about it being expensive! We have been forced (in our mind) to move to the northernmost part of the county due to problems from
run away illegal alien activity. It's freaking shame...
However, the house will be great when it's built (about a year) and I'll have some woods to romp in. What was the Eddie Albert, Eva Gabor sit-com? That's going to be us........
