In the back cover copy of both my books, my husband is described as "a public school teacher, coach extraordinaire, and total hunk." Here's a bit of proof about the coaching part. I got word today that the nomination letter I wrote for him to the National High School Coaches Association had convinced them to select him as this year's Softball Coach of the Year! While my letter was, of course, a masterpiece of eloquent persuasion,

it was his credentials that won him the honor, and I couldn't be more proud of him.

Here's what they said about him in the press release:

EASTON, Pa. – The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) today announced its selections as National High School Coaches of the Year for 2007.
It is the eighth year the NHSCA has honored these achievers in the high school coaching community nationwide. This year’s recipients, selected in a total of 20 boys and girls sports, are from 17 different states. While they represent a multitude of different backgrounds, they exhibit a common theme: a strong dedication to supporting and developing high school student-athletes.
"The coaches we are honoring today are outstanding examples for successful high school coaches in their sports," NHSCA associate executive director Joe Boardwine said. "They place a high value on the teamwork skills their players learn for success in the classroom and on the field, and we are proud to be honoring them."

Softball – Tony Scarbrough, Baker High School, Mobile, Ala.
In 21 seasons, Scarbrough has taken a Baker program which had never won more than 12 games in a season before he arrived to the top of the softball mountain in Alabama. During his career, which included 12 years in the slow-pitch state series before he converted Baker to fast-pitch in 1999, Scarbrough has built a career record of 1,088-314 and won six Class 6A state titles – three consecutive slow-pitch titles from 1991-93 and fast-pitch crowns in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Scarbrough’s last five teams own a 361-37 record. His 2005 team, perhaps the best in state history, finished 78-3 and set or tied 20 state records. This year’s team broke one of those records by finishing 79-7. Prior to taking the reins at Baker, Scarbrough won over 1,000 games, 17 metro titles, eight state titles and four national titles as a Junior Olympic softball coach. He was inducted into the Mobile Softball Hall of Fame in 1992.

Great record...but then there is much to be said for the eloquence of the writing. I received a national award back in 1989 because of a nomination letter written by my friend Susan Cantrell, and for no other discernible reason. (Of course, Tony has has other discernible reasons...er....umm...how do I get out of this?)

I'll get you out, Tom, just by making sure your post isn't the last. Which isn't likely in any case.

Anyway, to the award. That is indeed quite the record, Joyce, that your hubby as coach has recorded. And good for you for writing the letter! Now where I grew up in Western Pennsylvania, there was a lot of softball played, mostly slow-pitch. And with rare exception those slow pitch games were always followed by a trip to the club or neighborhood bar. So what do Tony and you do after the game?

In central Indiana, we didn't play slow ball of fast ball. We palyed half fast ball. (Read it out loud for fll effect.)

Frank, just like Jeana and Mickey, (the main characters in TRUE BLUE FOREVER) Tony and I don't drink anything stronger than Pepsi. As for what we do after the games, I would refer you to the favorite pasttime of Jaycee and Bud, the characters in DIFFERENT ROADS. Win or lose.
