Here in much of Kentucky drought has taken hold, as is the case with other states in the Southeast. As a result, considerably less mowing of grass and fields has occurred, causing me to wonder what the impact is on fuel supply and fuel prices. In the past week gas prices have dropped to under 3 dollars for regular at many stations. Some TV reporting on this has said the reason is because there has been an increase in production, but I've neither seen nor heard anything that connects the ongoing drought to the entire matter, and I can't help suspect that it is a factor. |

Please, Frank, I implore you, do not rely on TV reporting to help you understand this matter, or much of anything else. It's much too complex to be explained in 20-seconds. Tom Elkins NORTH of TEXAS www.authorsden.com/tomelkins |

totally agree Newspapers are the best source of the How and Why of current events. Most major newspapers are online and free. You can even read the opinion pieces and commentaries. My second most important information source is radio. PBS is not the love of my life and Rush gets irritating but news these days is covering from political, economic and social leanings. Sifting through all the garbage takes time and is more than annoying but it beats the quickies you get from the boob-tube. http://www.perrycomer.com

Tom and Pac, I wouldn't rely on television reporting to explain the matter anymore than I would rely on Mindsight or the Petroleum Institute. Investigative reporting takes time and, although a newspaper may be a daily, thorough reporting isn't likely to be completed in just a day or two. The same goes for magazines, which also have a lead time anywhere from 30-60 days. What I would expect from TV news, however, is something resembling a "scoop." That's to say, that a reporter might want to make some preliminary looking-into as to whether there is a connection between the drought and recent lower prices. That person might want to start with a few local calls to lawn mower dealerships to see where sales stand in the past week or two. He might want to give a call to a national organization concerned with lawn care or what have you to see if there's a trend. He might want to ask some station owners if they see many people filling up the smaller gas cans for home use. He might want get in touch with those farmers who have diesel and gas delivered to tanks on their farms and find out whether they've ordered less. You mistakenly concluded I am looking for an easy answer to a complex p[roblem. All I'm looking for is creativity. Creativity first in supposition, then exploration, and finally analysis. A thing or idea never proposed will not be investigated, which could mean that the results of whatever was investigated will not be wholly reliable. |

I'm on your wave-length, for the most part. Been there, done that. But today's TV news has turned into the "fame game". A field reporter's primary concern is getting a story on the network Evening News. It means extra money and great exposure, which hasten his prospects for promotion to Wasington or NYC. Stories likely to get on the Evening News are - well - those that fit the template of the day. No kinder way to say it. On the other hand, when I get wind of a breaking story (usually on the radio, which is faster) I'll switch to CNN Headline News or CNN Regular. Although the network has a template, its response to breaking news is remarkable. Tom Elkins NORTH of TEXAS www.authorsden.com/tomelkins |

See Frank the counter to your theory that there is less gas consumption in the drought areas because nothing is growing is that people will have to drive farther to find a good fruit stand with decent fruit. I suppose they may also drive farther to get away from the drought, even for the weekend. I heard on the radio the other day that there has been no new refineris built since the 70's. I'm thinkin' that a couple new refineries that aren't needing constant repairs would drop prices. Here's a question: How high do gas prices in America have to go up before there is a major change in our driving mentality? Will there come a point in this country where a majority of the people start looking for something other than the auto as we know it for daily communtes? (I'm talking public, not gvernmental.) I'm guessing we'll have to hit somewhere over $5.00 before there is a change in the public mentality. Kevin |

What in the devil is wrong with our driving mentality? It's the groups who prevent new refineries from being built and who also won't allow us to drill on our own soil that are responsible for high gasoline prices. http://www.stephenlodge.com Novels by Stephen Lodge: "Charley Sunday's Texas Outfit!" Why is Brazil running almost exclusively on Ethanol as their primary source of fuel but we can't seem to figure it out? I ran Methanol (very close) in my raceboat for years and never had a problem. It burns much more efficiently which translates into less (practically zero) emmisions and no carbon buildup in your combustion chambers or exhaust system. Ethanol doesn't save money and it competes with food...whether you get it from corn, sugar or beets, or whatever. Might cut down on oil consumption, but not on price. Tom Elkins NORTH of TEXAS www.authorsden.com/tomelkins |

Needing to change a mentality doesn't mean there is something wrong. By needing a change I mean that the way we drive and the cost could grow into conflict and one will need to change. Personally I'm waiting for the solar powered transporters to beam us to where we need to go. Won't that teach OPEC a lesson. Kevin |

My memory is as full of holes as an old bucket Tom carried water in when he was a boy. Way back when, maybe the 70's, I remember buying gas containing 10-20% ethanol and the cars ran great. Why did they stop and if we are really so concerned about importing oil why isn't the mix on the market? Car guys??? Know the answer???? http://www.perrycomer.com

"Ethanol doesn't save money and it competes with food..." Seems to me we're shipping corn to Brazil... If production is increased the price will come down. We have millions of acres currently in the soil bank where the government pays farmers NOT to grow crops. And as far as I know, most of the American farmers don't have a Jihad going against their neighbors. Dennis Collins Moderator www.theunrealmccoy.com http://theunrealmccoy.blogspot.com |

I think that all gas sold in Michigan (except racing fuel) has 10% ethanol. We have a few stations that offer 85% ethanol. Dow Chemical has a huge biodeisel processing plant in Harbor Beach, MI. I have a friend who exclusively drives deisel vehicles (A big 1-ton dually 4WD Ford pickup and a gorgeous Mercedes-Benz) and makes his own fuel at about $.28 per gallon from recycled cooking oil. Kevin: "I'm guessing we'll have to hit somewhere over $5.00 before there is a change in the public mentality." We pay well over $6.00, and people are starting to buy SUV's. There are hardly any dirtroads or hills anywhere in the nation where they might come in handy, and they are difficult to drive through ancient small city streets or to park. Perhaps when we have to pay over $8.00 they start to buy Hummers? And over $9.00 perhaps tanks? Beats me, I'm lost. |

I live near Charlotte which is a rather large city (several 50 + skyscrapers). Freeways and interstates dominate the city central and the outer fringes. A few years ago (2000) they decided to add light rail and to extend bus service. Our area is roughly 99% auto traffic, no walkers, or fools on bikes, a few motorcycles . Trains are as rare as hen's teeth except for those hauling freight and the few passengers trains are too expense and slow to compete with planes. If gas went to say $5.00 per US gallon the economy of our area would shut down. The choice would become food or gas. And don't even talk about ride-sharing, gee-whiz, who wants to get into a car and be subjected to THEIR schedule? http://www.perrycomer.com

I wonder if there will come a time when the goverment will regulate fuel effeciency. Say SUV's (new ones) would be required to have a requirement of 20city/24hwy, sudans30/35 and so on. How about tax credits for driving a vehicle that is rated for over 45 miles a gallon in the city, something like 10 cents/mile, verified by approved mechanics. Or maybe a $500-1000 (based on distance) credit for using public transit (credit card type passes could track this easy enough) or biking to work (done with a portable odometer that could download or otherwise send milage every week or month). There's solutions out there but it's jut a matter of how many of us would actually use them. Kevin
Could you see dedicated "highways" for those of us crazy enough to take our bikes out on the road for a distance? We could take care of the gas problem AND the obesity problem in one swoop. |

I heard some talk about taxing SUV's and tax cuts for hybrids, but no idea what will happen. A survey claimed that SUV drivers had small genitals, but I don't know about that. It might have been a scientist in a tiny Suzuki that conducted the survey. We do have decicated 'bike roads' next to the road, which are relatively safe to use. Also the drivers of the cars are used to bikes, and watch out for them. It is actually quite 'classy' to arrive at work on a bike here. I don't like ride-sharing, or car pooling as they call it here, for the reasons Perry mentioned. We do have special car pool places to stimulate it, and some 'long distance' folks use it. I kind of take offense at that. When I go for bike rides I always obey the laws. Even teaching the kids to do the same. I see as many cars run stop signs as bikers. I do hate it when other bikers are cutting through traffic and parking lots like they are obstical courses (then again, I've seen drivers do the same). Kevin |

Those rude and obnoxious type cyclists at home came in groups. There would be twenty or thirty of them...I guess training or something...on our two lane roads. My husband wanted to get a big cane pole and just hold it out the window as we went by and swat them on the butt which is usually quite far up in the air in those lycra shorts. Anyway, I since we moved to the middle of nowhere, I haven't seen any cyclists. Gloria www.gloriamarlow.com Flowers for Megan**Shades of Silence**The Butterfly Game |

Ah, thought I had misunderstood something. Bicycle racers can indeed be obnoxious, here too. Sometimes they think they are in the Tour the France, when they are allowed to have the streets to themselves. But the average byciclist rides reasonably, except for the boys in the difficult dare devil age. When I still had a moped they sometimes rode almost in my neck, I hated that. Swatting them on the butt might be something I will have a go at too. Sounds wonderfull. Pushing them onto the highway with your car might be fun too though. See how fast they can go. |

When my oldest was younger I also babysat my sister's twins and we lived where there were a dozen other boys there age. My husband and my brother-in-law built massive skateboard ramps all over the yards and there were always kids in and out and around. Now, that we've moved their aren't any friends or cousins around. I would say that a person riding a 10 lb. bicycle who challenges a two ton truck for the right to four feet of asphalt, either has fantasy based faith in human kindness or is just plain stupid. Oh, he'll get away with it 90% of the time but the other 10% will be the last 10% of his life experience. Motorcyclists, on the other hand have no such delusions. They learn early on that cars and trucks are on a mission to run over as many of us as possible. I'm currently having a heat-seeking missile launcher installed on my Harley. Riding my 'cycle all through my early years I only got hit by one truck. Ok, I mostly ran into it. Fine, it was parked and I was looking over my shoulder and ran into the back of it. My brother was riding across an intersection when a truck turned across infornt of him and he smacked into the rear wheel, flipped over the back and landed in the bed of the truck. Turned out to be our old cub scout troop leader. One of my wife's old friends had someone loosen the front wheels on his bike in High school so when he popped a wheely his front wheel kept going. His fork hit the ground and he flipped over and landed on his back. Wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't been in front of a big crowd showing off. Kevin Kevin |
