My son the computer guy brought home the latest thing in mice (mouses). Instead of that rubber ball that gets all grungie, it has a miniture camera which takes pictures of the pad surface at the rate of 15,000 times per second. Said pictures direct the screen cursor to go where it's supposed to. Just what we need, right? From Microsoft. No idea the cost...he wouldn't discuss it.

I use an optical mouse (has a red light underneith). When we first got it it wouldn't work very well. Seems the black surface of my desk didn't reflect enought light. As soon as I out it on a lighter surface the mouse worked great.

I have a little, itty-bitty laptop mouse that is optical that is attached to the puter by a cord, and has the red light underneath. I love this little guy, he does everything I want him to do with absolutely no questions or back-talk..... now that is a good little guy. He is the second one I have had like him, the other one is on my old laptop and still connected to that puter, until I clean it off and sell it to my neighbor. I like him also, so much that I might just attach him to my desktop instead of the bigger optical mouse that is sitting in front of it now.

My wife just bought me a new Dell Computer on QVC. It'll be arriving next month. I haven't upgraded in quite a few years so my question is:
Can you now transfer everything you have stored on the old hard disc to the new hard disc in one easy move? If so, how is it done and where do I go to get it done?

Stephen,
I am still trying to figure out the way to do just that, and so far, I have gotten a few of the things off of the other puter and on to this one, but not all. Will let you know when I do, OK.....

stephen - your new dell will come with a cd which will include a program to run that will transfer your files -- it will probably include a usb cable for the transfer. it is an easy program to run

Desktop or laptop?
Internal hard drive or external?
Do you have a CD writer drive?

What sorts of files are you wanting to transfer?
Programs?
Settings?

I know of a way to do it in a way I would consider easy, but it might be considered complicated by most.

The easiest way that I know of is to set up the new drive as a slave to the first, and copy it all to the new drive. Then, take out the old drive and set the new drive as the master.

But a lot of that will depend on the answers to the questions above.

If you're merely wanting to transfer user files, the easiest way is to burn a CD. Also makes for a nice backup technique.

It's a desktop. I'm sure it's internal. It better have a CD writer for what we paid.

I want to copy my entire old hard drive to the new hard drive. A program called "Drive Copy" has been suggested. It's supposed to do the job in one fell swoop. I'll let you all know what happens as soon as the computer arrives. Thank you all for your help and suggestions ~

An optical mouse is nicer than the old ones with ball, but sometimes they make the cursor jump to some obscure corner of the screen. Both at work and at home I noticed this.

I don't trust backups on CD's or DVD's; they sometimes 'rot.' I use an external drive for back ups, and also save a copy to my son's computer, AND back up on CD. I did use a USB stick for backups, but I have lost that somewhere in the house...
But this only after I had lost part of my manuscript during a clean desktop action by my son. Had to scan part of it in again...

Has anyone of you tried the Ubuntu (Linux) operating system?

I bought a Linux from Staples.com. It worked like a dream and cost $200 less than a comparable PC because Microsoft doesn't get their cut (instead of Windows it used the Linux open source system). However, AT & T Broadband refused to allow us to connect to the internet with it. They wouldn't give me a reason but I suspect it has something to do with Microsoft because they have used their economic leverage to do this kind of thing in the past. After two months of trying to get Earthlink to accept my business (they initially said yes, but balked when it came time to actually make the connection), I sent my beautiful Linux computer back to Staples and they gave me a full refund.

Why Linux beats Windows:

1. It's free
2. It's open source
3. No viruses or worms
4. Most of the software is free
5. Microsoft can't seize control and take you where you don't want to go
6. No cookies, adware or spyware to worry about
7. No Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation propaganda
8. No bells and whistles to bog down your hard drive
9. No need for patches and service packs
10. You don't have to pay to upgrade to the latest version.

Thanks, now I know why that's been happening.

Well obviously, I was the last person on the planet to acquire an optical mouse. I took my son to the woodhouse...he confessed I was.

Fred, I love the whole idea behind Linux, and sure hope they will make it someday. I own a Mac (unix based,) and am quite happy with that, but the next one will be Linux, which sounds much more sympathetic and has evolved quite a bit lately. I think microsoft might be getting a bit worried about Linux.
I haven't heard of the internet problems with it yet here? I will ask around.
What you say about Microsoft also reminds me of the Cirrus processors a long time ago. That company used reversed engineering to build better chips than Intel (who had a deal with microsoft) so microsoft checked if there was a Cirrus processor and shut the thing down.

Stephen, I suspect the strange jumping might be caused by confusing pictures the little camera inside the mouse receives. You might try a mousepad with some complex pattern or something, if it gets too annoying.

No Tom, you are not the last person on earth with an optical mouse, my son still owns one with a ball, a horrible one even. But he thinks it looks cool, and that seems to be more important than that it really functions.
