It's more fuel-efficient, and quieter, so that is a good thing. I hope they will not start to build fuel guzling 'hummer planes' to counteract it. |

Like the A380?
Boeing has been talking about this blended wing passenger jet for years. It will be interesting to see them do it, but I won't be holding my breath.
That being said, flying wings aren't anything new. The B-2 is the latest one I know of, and even it came from WWII lineage (B-49 and the B-35). The concept is sound...it's just a matter of implementation.

the wide body of this thing makes me think of a flying house. remember the early drawings of flying wings for passengers? Like mini hotels or passenger ships on the oceans.
I KNOW - the light bulb went on --- THOSE ufo sightings are really flying wings developed by the aliens and we are just now catching on. The current version is similar to what crashed in Roswell.

I don't know if I'd claim truth or fiction based on what a "company spokesperson" says, though...
Personally, it surprises me that they would claim to be doing research into military applications with it...one would think that would make the Pentagon a little peeved.
The C-5 and C-17 won't last forever, though, and they'll likely need something that can haul lots of equipment all over the world.
Harry, no problem...just realize that when you're carrying that many passengers (the A380 is the new double-decker jumbo jet from Airbus), you're going to be guzzling TONS of gas, regardless of whether it's more fuel-efficient or not.

Sure, but should'n you divide that by the weight of the load/number passengers? So that the amount of fuel per passenger/kilo(stone) is less than average?
Meaning: isn't it the efficiency that counts? |

Yes, the airplane in your link is the same concept (from the same company)...
I'd say efficiency counts if you're the airline (rake in more dollars for seats filled and fewer dollars in gas purchased), but from a sheer usage (quantity) standpoint, it's still a lot of gas.
It would be equivalent of saying a hybrid SUV can get 15% better fuel efficiency than a standard. When the standard SUV was only getting 20-25 MPG in the first place, that means the hybrid might see 23-29. That's still crappy, just not as crappy...

Love your new piccy, Todd.
I'm more interested in Virgin America -- with supposedly lower fares and not as crowded, plus amenities. Richard Branson says he doesn't mind losing money if passengers have an improved flight experience. Guess we'll find out soon enough if the experience is what it's cracked up to be.
