My son needed a faster computer to run programs from school. Of course they don't cater for Macs, so he could not use mine, and his was old and shakey anyway. Certainly not suitable for the programs he was trying to run on it.

So we got a new one, with Vista already installed. We checked it out for about half an hour, and then decided to chuck it and put XP on it. Now the thing runs fine.

I will never understand why microsoft can't ask you all those questions straight at the beginning of the installation, so you can leave. Now it takes hours as I'm not going to wait for the thing to ask me a question every now and then. Next time I will get one of those installers that arrange that for you...

Perhaps it is me, but I can't see the advantage of Vista? It looks a bit more polished, but runs rather slow (on a 3.5 Ghz clock, brandnew computer) And it still does not look as smooth as Mac's OS, running on only 1.2 clock.

Anyone gave Vista a more thorough test? (Somebody with more patience perhaps?)

I haven't been too impressed with our Vista machine. The thing runs slow compared to my XP machine (an older, slower machine, even though I doubled the RAM on the Vista), and is just all around a pain-in-the-ass. I wish there was an easy way to set up the "watchdog" (not sure what it's called, but the warning message that comes up anytime something important is about to be changed) to only cue you on certain events...I don't really care to be cued when I'm going to change every little setting.

When asked, I recommend just what you did...chuck it and install XP.
Unfortunately, I didn't want to spend the extra money to buy XP (Vista comes standard on everything) at the store when buying the Vista machine.

I can't run some of my old programs with Vista so I've installed them on my wife's computer for future use.

Also, since so many folks are having trouble with Vista, maybe Microsoft should offer a free version of XP to those who'd like to change back.

I totally agree - VISTA is awesome - AS A PAIN IN THE ASSSSSSSSSesses

But if you are running xp with service pack 2, you have the same aggravations

When I got a new computer at the beginning of the year, it came with XP installed but had a Vista upgrade. I never took the trouble of sending the list of things I had to send in order to get the upgrade disk.

I'm glad I didn't now. I have not heard anything good about Vista.

I'm on standing orders from my son, the computer guy. Whenever I hear of some new, fancy upgrade, I'm to ask him about it. So I said,"Jeff, what's a Vista?" He replied, "You don't want it." Period. He then proceeded to lecture me on the vacissitudes of the computer world, and I drifted off. He does come in handy now and them.

I supose people need new things when they don't need it. Well, Vista is down the memory hole concerning me. I have heard than one of the supercomputers runs on Linux? But I suppose that isn't Ubuntu or such...

Where are a days of BASIC? Now that was still fun. Or to have the ENIAC running in your shed; something else as Vista.
