I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself, and to thank you for accepting me into your site. A little about myself (please try to stay awake). I am a first time author, who is in the process of trying to publish my novel. I am a firm believer that God gave me two ears and one mouth so that I may listen twice as much as I talk, so please feel free to give me any advice that you may have to offer a rookie. All gems of your wisdom will be greatly appreciated}}.

Welcome, Steven! It's always good to see new blood here. (No, I don't write vampire romances, but I'm considering it based on their apparent popularity!)

Do you have a Web site or somewhere we can read samples of your work? Looking forward to getting to know you!

Thank you all for the warm reception. Don't worry Bill, my wife already told me that I can't let other women near my neck,so the situation is covered (thanks for the advice though). Now, for your questions...
1) Pacwriter: Unfortunately, I am still trying to decide the best avenue to approach this monster from. Thanks to a few experienced writers as yourselves, I narrowly escaped a brush with death (PA). I am currently pursuing a literary agency to protect my interests (Donald Maass). Please chime in if any of you have any feedback on this agency.
2) Joyce, as of this time I currently have no posted sampling of my book. However, I would be more than happy to e-mail a few pages to you if you would like (that goes for the rest of you as well).
3) Harry, something tells me that we are going to get along just fine. I am not an antagonist, but I do possess the uncanny ability to find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time (usually resulting in tasting my own boot leather).
4) Claudia, I am a 35 year-old truck driver/ Rigger (WITH AN "R"). Yes this is the name of an actual job (see yellow pages under rigging). Long and short, I tear down heavy machinery (specializing in printing presses of all types), and move them from location to location. I am married with two young daughters, and live in a SMALL town located SW of St.Louis, Mo. This is the main reason for me deciding to finally publish my work.
I've actually been toying with the book since I was 14-15, but kept it as a hobby only. Being a truck driver, I am rarely home. Late last year, I walked into the kitchen one morning (after a long trip on the road) and realized that my oldest daughter had mysteriously managed to turn five years old!!! It seemed like I was bouncing her on my knee before I left on the afore mentioned trip, and BAM!!! Here she was starting kindergarden.
That was the instant that I realized that I had been on the road long enough. It was time to "change gears" (pardon the pun), and do something with my life that would allow me to spend more time with my family. I invested every spare second for the next several months polishing my hobby into a marketable manuscript.
As for the book...The title is "Rise from the ashes", and it would probably be the science fiction version of Centennial, or Lonesome Dove (if I might be so bold). Rise from the ashes follows a number of characters from the aftermath of a devastating attack, throughout two years of their lives, until the final end to their brutal war against a conquering tyrant. The novel begins (naturally) in the aftermath of the suprise attack launched by an unknown force. Throughout the first few chapters, the "lead character" (Aaridon) attempts to ascertain the identity of the hostile force, while trying to protect his nation from further attacks.
As stated earlier, there are a number of characters, hence there are a number of sub-plots interweaved throughout the work (thus the comparison to Lonesome Dove, or Centennial). The thing that I love about my book (yes I am biased...lol) is that it is told through the individual character's eyes. You "see" what they are thinking, and the thought process that leads them to make their decisions (right, wrong, or questionable).
There are a number of sub-plots, ranging from love stories, to tongue in cheek comedy, candid moments between family members, mystery/ suspense, conspiracy theory...and military engagements of every conceivable nature.
Fair word of warning...I pulled VERY few punches when writing this novel. The blood is as real as the heartache. The feeling of loss is as deep as the rapture of victory.
Whew, I think that wore me and my poor keyboard out.

It sounds like an interesting book Steven, perhaps you could post a few pages of your manuscript in "The Mindsight/BPC workshop?"
That way only registered users (and all registered users) can read it.

I think it was agood move to reserve more time for your family; your family is what counts in the end.

If you are considering a publisher or agent you might check out this site:

http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/peba.htm

As many of us have found out the hard way; there is a lot of scum among publishers and agents.

In regards to the Donald Maass Agency, I submitted a query package to one of their agents a few months back, and received a timely response. They weren't interested in the premise of my book, but it was a courteous response and didn't seem to just be automatically generated, so......

wow, I must say, I didn't quite expect that much of an intro, however, it does give us all the info that we need and would like to have when conversing with you and knowing about your drive and ambition and relative work. I am happy to make the welcome wagon open, the coffee and donuts are on the table, right over there in the corner. Just help yourself.

As far as the PA thing, most of us here were in their clutches, me for over 5 years until they finally let me and my book go in Feb 2006. It was a most harrowing experience and I am so glad that you didn't fall into it (them). As you mentioned, it is the kiss of death, if not for just that book, but possibly for the writer inside of you as well. It pretty much put my book into the trash can, but I live on in many other ways. I may, someday, finish the rewrite that I started on my book and see if I can find another publisher for it, but right now, just have not got the heart for it. Much is the pity, but someday......

There is a wealth of info in this site, and many people who will gladly offer up their expertise and opinions, so just keep asking and putting things out here and you will get the responses, maybe some you won't like, but they will be honest. Joyce is a great editor, so follow her advice to the letter.

Harry, I would be more than happy to post a diverse sampling of my work on the BPC workshop (just as soon as I figure out where it is). Not to sound like an idiot, but I really haven't had much time to explore the forum thus far. Please note though, some of the material, characters, (and occasionally language) can be rather abrasive (most are combat hardened veterans, under extreme duress). I know that we are all adults here, but I will respectfully leave the final decision in your capable hands. Thank you for the tip on P&E. Thank God a kind soul like yourself alerted me to that site 2 days before I was to sign with PA.
Todd, I noticed much the same feeling of personal attention from the Maass agency. They have acepted the first 5 pages for review (and hopefully many more in the days to come). Thank you for your input kind sir.
Claudia, I do apologize for the long introduction (I tend to get carried away sometimes). Thank you for the coffee & donuts (they are delicious). I hate to come to a party empty handed, so I left a pitcher of my signature sweet tea on the table beside them. Please don't give up your dreams on that rewrite, as it is our dreams that shape us into the people that we strive to be. It is when we allow a person (or group) to steal our dreams, that we tend to lose sight of that thin strand of humanity that binds us into the person that we are. Yes, the damage is done, but we can all Rise from the ashes, and triumph over the insanity of this life. As for advice/critique that I won't like...not a chance. I listen to everything that is said, and take to heart what is pertinent to the situation.

Harry, remember what I said earlier about opening my mouth and inserting my foot? It seems that I've done it again. I briefly found the workshop in question, but lost it again as soon as I logged off in order to upload my manuscript from my other computer (call me paranoid, but I never keep copies of my work on a computer connected to the internet for fear of it being hacked). I promise that I will post the first chapter as soon as I resolve the problem (connection, software...???)

Looking forward to reading your samples after they're posted, Steven. If for some reason you can't get them on the BPC Workshop, please do e-mail them to me. If you're interested, you can read samples of mine on my pages at Authors Den. (The link is in my not-as-long-as-it-used-to-be signature below.)

Do not believe anything Bill says about me, but Claudia can be trusted absolutely. Todd is reliable unless he's been into that Vladirian liquor again (see his blog for an explanation). Harry is not as antagonistic as he used to be, but I think he's working with Frank on staging a comeback. Stephen and Perry are both good guys, but Tom and Fred are dirty old men and proud of it. The rest of the ladies are sweethearts most of the time, except maybe Jennifer and LaurieAnne, who are both publishing honchos and get kind of full of themselves sometimes. And, of course, C.E. is never wrong because it's his forum and he's the boss.

And there you have it. The scoop on the regular Mindsighters.

Ok folks, one problem resolved (software on my Fred Flintstone computers was causing slight problems properly logging into the site. Issue resolved, full site listings now available). I was unable to upload the entire first chapter to the workshop, but (after giving up on the wonders of ancient technology)finally decided to manually add the first 12 pages of the first chapter. Please feel free to critique me to death (trust me, you will not hurt my feelings at all). Be forewarned, I was attempting to type, whilst keeping a close eye on my two young daughters and their new border collie pup. For all I know, I may have just posted the recipe for my trademark beef potpie???
Joyce, I look forward to reading your pages. I will be happy to post, or e-mail more of my work if anyone would like to see it. Side note, I will be out of town from tuesday, probably through friday on a business trip (we're pulling a press out of Tennesee, and taking it to Chicago). I hope you like the pages I have posted, and again, feel free to offer any input that you may have to offer.

Joyce, caught a bit of this, and some of that from the links you supplied. Loved Midsummer Shower. I know that it was only a short, but in a lot of ways, a short is much like balck&white photography. You have to rely solely on the composition to deliver your thought, instead of relying on the spectrum of color to distract attention away from any subtle mistakes that were made in the shot. Anyhow, excellent character and plot development (and the bad guy got what he deserved!!!). From what I've read thus far, you can bet that I will keep a pen and notebook by this computer to jot notes during our discussions.
Thank you for the chance to read your material.

Thanks for reading "Midsummer Shower," Steven. Actually, I wrote that one when I was in high school, although it's much more polished now than it was in its original form. My story "Hope Chest," which features the heroine of my second book, DIFFERENT ROADS, as an eight-year-old, is the piece I think displays my best effort of everything I've written so far.

Heading over to the BPC Workshop now to leave you some feedback on your baby.

Nice work on Hope Chest. I had a little trouble getting into it at first (the kids new border collie pup discovered my oldest daughter's rabbit...no harm done. Kind of funny watching a cattle dog trying to herd a "long-eared cow"). Situation diffused, and I was able to get back to your pages. I found it very easy to fall into the scenes (good descriptive wording), and was very impressed by the indomitable spirit of your character. PS, I love a story with an uplifting moral. Again, thanks for letting me review your work.
