In our fair state today a man in Dallas was convicted (yes, convicted) of killing his 10-month-old dog. He's looking at a max of 2 years in the slammer. (I didn't know it was a crime, but I guess I'm for it.)

Not sure, Perry. Cattle and hogs would be considered domestic...or at least not "wild". And we kill them by the ton. And we have a limited deer season. Duck, geese, and other game birds are carefully controlled, but chicken and turkeys are an industry. Some dedicated legislators must have spent endless hours pondering those weighty matters.

I think the guy might be able to appeal? Unless the law is written exclusively for dogs the guy should be able to get out of jail.

The accused isn't a dog too, is he?
Jury of the defendant's peers, Harry...not the victim's.

On a more serious note (while the pain meds kick in), it depends on how and why the guy killed his dog. We don't know any of the details of this case, so it's hard to gauge whether the guy deserves to be in jail or not. Though, if this is the case in question, I'd say the guy deserves what he was given.
I do know that Kansas recently passed an "animal cruelty" law (Magnum's Law) which would make it a felony. I've never seen the official wording of the statute, so I'm not sure what would constitute a violation. Again, dousing a dog with gasoline and setting him/her on fire would most likely register as a 'yes' in that regard.
My only fear with these kinds of laws is that somehow they'll be misconstrued against the wrong people (like cattle at the slaughterhouse) and used to further a political agenda.

Not sure what cruelty to animals has to do with politics. I'm against it, whatever that means. So is Tucker. I've had to "put down" a few of my own over the years. Breaks my heart every time.
