My dad got this when he was 7 and I've been drooling over it since I was a kid. My paretns brought it up to our new house with other of their surplus furniture. It is officially the oldest thing in our family (despite what my kids say about me)

I learned to type on an old Underwood almost like that but not quite as old. Great to have one of those around, so that when the power is out, you can still do work...... yeah right.

A couple of weeks ago at one of the thrift stores, there were a bunch (5 to 8 or so) of them in, but the man that was looking at them when I got up to that section, took all of them. Great old antiques, I still love them, although my favorite typewriter was and still is the IBM Selectric (even though it was electric). The Selectric keyboard is the keyboard that all of the computers were patterned after, until you go the evolved ones, but if you close your eyes and use a laptop, you can still feel that Selectric under your fingers. The Underwood that I learned on in school was most likely about 10 years newer than that one, schools back in those days weren't as up to date on their machines as they are now.

I had one of those in college, Kevin. It was my mother's discard. She had been a highly regarded private secretary and typed with blazing speed, and she prevailed on me to take a Typing class in high school. All other members of the class were girls.

I think it's pretty innovative: keyboard and printer all in one!

and if you know how to do it, you can even make a few extra copies off of the original at the same time you are making the original. Without a copier. you want to know how to do it.... oh com'on, just ask....... ever remember a thing called carbon film??
but ya gotta hit the keys really hard when you have a few copies to make. almost hurts your thumbs.

and then if you wanted a bunch of copies, there was a thingy called a mimeograph machine, that inversed the film and punched out the letters and you rolled it (the film) over a barrel thing that had ink in it that printed into the punched out letters and gave you as many copies as you wanted.... and it had a funny smell that almost got you high.

I can still remember those machines from elementary school Claudia! I think they were called 'stencil machines' here. You had to do a bit of manual labor too.

Our teacher loved to make copies on that thing, so I suspect your remark about getting hight must be right.

But I have actually seen some computermodifications who really had keyboards like old typewriters and such: looked really nice.

you had to manually turn the drum with a handle of some sort, depending on the model of the machine you had. It had blue or green film that you had to put onto the barrel and smooth it and hold it down with clips while the paper fed thru it and it reverse stamped out the letters and the ink filled in the reverse stamp to make the copies on the new page. Here is a link so that you can see a picture of one of the later models.

The one that I remember in school was not quite this new. Fond memories..... and there was also that thing called "silk screening" that has sort of changed nowadays, but not much, unless you get the computerized versions, which is now available, but the easiest and cheapest way was the manual one, and you could build a set-up yourself from stuff you had. Kind of the same principle as the mimeograph, but used for bigger art projects that you are transferring pictures onto material or canvas as in prints and using many colors. You cut out several screens for each color you are using and press them into or on the master as you apply the colors in layers that you want to use in the series.

I do remember the silkscreens: you could indeed print in several colors. I once made a silly T-shirt with that. It said "I am OK." And than I threw up in somebody's garden and people started to doubt the truth of that statement...
