My local municipality - MOnroe, NC - says we have less than 90 days of water left. For some strange reason the rain keeps passing us by. The last time we had rain of 1/10 of an inch was back in July. It rains down on the coast and up in the mountains but us folks south of I-85 and east of I-77, and North of I-95 are about to start drinking our spit. http://www.perrycomer.com

here in Reno area, we ONLY get an average of 7.5 inches of rain/snow water mix per year, and this year we were unfortunate enough to ONLY GET just over 3.25 inches of rain/snow all total. Down in CA where the fires are right now, they only got about 3.50 inches of rain this last year and they usually get about 12 inches on average. That is why we in Nevada have had so many devastating fires this year and now they are having the same in So. Calif. Over 900,000 acres of land burned in Nevada, and I am sure that the fire total with this fire season in So. Calif., will be upwards of 1,000,000 acres. I hope you guys get some rain back there, it sure seems that LA (by what the news has shown) has gotten its share lately, as well as Texas and other nearby locations. On the other hand, where I live, I have gotten about an inch more rain than they have in Reno area. I live on the lee side of the Sierra's where it is a bit more north and we typically get more rain/snow than they do in Reno. But overall, the West has had serious problems with drought/lack of rain/snow this past year. Hoping for a big load of white stuff falling from the sky would be a great idea, oh, and a few rain dances might help also. (Even I would welcome a bit of it, and I DON'T like rain at all, but know that we need it dearly).... Speaking fo the fires in Los Angeles are, I used to work at the HRL Labs in Malibu that lost at least one smaller building to the fire and I still know quite a few people who are or were in potential jeopardy there as well as in San Diego area. Stephen, any updates that you can give would be very welcome. Can't get through to any of the services in the locations down there, and oh,..... Fred, any news you might be able to give would be welcome also. I know that the Riverside area is OK foro the time, but that could change in a minute, as you well know, so keep us posted, OK?????? I should have complained about hogging the rain early. It's now raining on my roof! Not much but enough to clean the air.

See, we just left Oregon because it rained there too much. 70+ inches a year. We'd get a week of rain, with no break. No, that's not right, it would stop raining if you had all your rain gear on. Central Cal. is so much better, and we are in the middle of wine country so I know my parents will come see me more often. Kevin |

Kentucky's Bluegrass Region (where I live) achieved the designation "Extreme Drought," But that's been wiped fairly clean after the past 36 hours of rain. Just before the rain started, I remarked to my wife that I hadn't seen any small birds of late. Quite the opposite, I was seeing dozens and dozens of turkey vultures every time I stepped outside. However, once the rains came and puddles were formed in the driveway, I looked out my door and watched about 50 robins having one helluva good time washing themselves. They were jumping in and out of the water with more robins joining in. I swear some were using their wings to deliberately splash water in the faces of others. The ablutions went on for an hour before they all disappeared again. It made my day. |

You know it is dry when creeks have no water. I'm talking creeks that in memory of the locals were never dry. The real rain is still to our east and to the west. Yesterday we had a brief shower for about five minutes. It was welcome but I'm sure envious of those getting inches of rain. Here's a good one: A developer had bought 5,000 or so acres in South Carolina on the banks of the Wateree River (lake) - He is planning to sell 50 to 100 acre "lots" to the rich of New York who have places in the Catskills. The per acre price is around 20,000. Two years ago you could have bought the same land for 2,000 per acre. Rich folk are stupid. Why buy 100 acres on a lake when the nearest road to your property is five miles away? I'm talking about road as in gravel or at best farm/market without lines. http://www.perrycomer.com

This past summer we here in Texas have been hoarding the rain...a rare happenstance for us. Under normal circumstances, in the central part of the state the difference between a river and a creek is, a river has water in it. (Oh, and creek is pronounced "crick". in the carolinas it's a crik in the neck but the same Texas crick except our creeks can be thirty feet wide and thirty feet deep anything less than a foot deep and ten feet across is a branch or spring. http://www.perrycomer.com

Our cricks are dry most of the time. But when it rains in the Hill Country the water collects in the crick beds as they flow down hill. By the time they reach the valleys there is enough water in them to jump the roads and produce "flash floods" - which many drivers try to drive through, much to their chagrin. We also get cricks in our necks. Same pronunciation, different meaning. Tom Elkins NORTH of TEXAS www.authorsden.com/tomelkins |
