I was over at my parents house earlier today. They had a dead tree in their yard that posed a significant danger to their house. Neither me nor my father are in any condition to fall the tree right now, so I contracted a neighbor to take it down. The safety line was taught, the forward face of the tree had been notched, and the man was making his final cut to fall the tree (the chainsaw was running full throttle). One of the neighbors (a man in his early twentys) looked at the safety line, the notch, and then walked right into the fall-line! The kid could not understand why the man cutting the tree got so upset! The two got into a heated argument afterward (no assault took place), and the kid went home pouting. Neither of us could convince him why we were so upset. Where is the common sense in today's youth? Where is the survival instinct Darwin claimed they are supposed to have? Perhaps I have become a little to harsh in my "old age", but sheesh!!!! |

people seem to refuse to think on their own anymore..... and much is the worse for all of the government "safety" things that are in the way and making them always rely on someone else to do their thinking to protect them. Coming from an oldster who totally is befuddled by them thar kids that refuse to use their god given minds........ Claudia MINDSIGHT MODERATOR

What does government have to do with someone walking in the line of where a tree is about to be felled? |

"What does government have to do with someone walking in the line of where a tree is about to be felled?" I read that comment as meaning today's young people are so used to having the various layers of government intermingled in their lives, they can't think for themselves anymore. I further think there is a great deal of truth in the statement. Don't you agree, Frank? |

I don't agree. Some people are just born without any sense. This can't be avoided. The government has had little to do with raising my teenage/young adult kids. I have noticed one of the main problems with kids my own kids' ages is this constant vigilance of the parents. Now, I understand trying to keep your kids safe and out of trouble, but when a parent can be in contact with a child 24/7, it is a bit ridiculous. Remember the first time you touched something that your mom said was hot? Or hurt yourself doing something your parents told you not to do? Etc. But think of what experience taught you. Think what an effective teacher experience is. If the branch had fallen on this guy's head, he would have known next time not only not to walk into the fall-line, but to make a wide circle around the tree. But kids now aren't being allowed to face consequences. They aren't learning from the hard knocks of life, because they are tethered and leashed to a parent who tells them what to do every step of the way. The parent moves the hot object without a word of warning, or doesn't own ladders because the child might climb on a roof, or puts a GPS system in their car, their cell phone, their coat, whatever, so that the kid can't get lost, or slip away to smoke a cigarette or make out or whatever. Anyway, even after saying all that, I still just say there are some people born without sense and the fact that the guy walked into the rope and never saw anything wrong with that, even to the point of arguing with the tree cutter, shows he may be one of them. www.geocities.com/gloriadmarlow http://youtube.com/user/gloriamarlow Flowers for Megan**Shades of Silence**The Butterfly Game |

Bill, it's just too big and ridiculous a jump to connect government to this incident. This 20+ year old may simply have had his head up his proverbial ass at the time, and for any of a hundred reasons. Is there any among us who haven't? Furthermore, while a running chainsaw may attract others' attention, a notched tree wouldn't mean a thing to a great many people. If we were to poll the people on this board, I wonder how many know how to properly fell a tree. It would have been helpful (not necessary) if the treecutter had someone standing out front and to the side to watch for others passing by. As for the young man, his reaction as described by Steven Lee suggests that he might be one of the "it's all about me" type. It apparently didn't occur to him that the treecutter was upset because he would not want the death of another human being on his hands. 3-dollar gas. Writers' strike. Read a great book by F. E. Mazur. SPINE THE BUCKSELLER "A BIGGER CASE" |

I agree that in the specific instance the kid was just too stupid to live. But, to the general reference of government interference in our everyday lives (from the cradle to the grave) it has merit. Too much government can make its citizens "zombie" like. Maybe that's a stretch, but it does have merit. |

That's true Bill. But our old discussions are still roaming the internet. Probably forever, try this link for a blast from the past: http://web.archive.org/web/20071110065512/http:/www.mindsightseries.com/cgi-bin/discus/board-auth.cgi?file=/3271/3271.html&lm=1175741113 So remember that we need to think about what we write on the internet: we need to delete real quick or it will be there forever. (Still a great tool to find out who was telling you crap and who told you the truth if you use it for news sites and such) Back on topic: Frank: "If we were to poll the people on this board, I wonder how many know how to properly fell a tree." It can be difficult: my sister's neighbours complained about the leafs from her tree, falling in their backyard. My sister decided to cut the tree. But the whole tree tipped to the wrong side and landed in the neighbour's yard, leafs and all. They didn't like that. |
