So very true True Todd. I find it humerous to read a character, who is billed to be the hero, yet lacks any heroic qualities. This opens a great debate as to what a hero is, and what qualities they should possess?
This is my humble opinion. Unlike Hollywood, I feel that a hero should be humble in nature, selfless in action, and steadfast in creed. Falling back to Royce (The nature and need of loyalty), many view those who die for a cause to be heroic. I have found those who have dedicated their lives to a belief to be far more heroic in my eyes. I enjoy a character (both written and in life) who are not only willing to admit their mistakes, but also to own those mistakes.
I held litle love for "Maveric" in Top Gun. However, I am enthralled by "Gus" from "Lonesome Dove", and Tom Clancy'S "Jack Ryan".
I look forward to hearing your definition of a hero and loyalty.

Heroes should fight crime and/or evil, shoot silver bullets, and leap tall buildings in a sinle bound.

Heroes shouldn't want to be heroes. They just are because they can't help being anything but.

A hero is a person who by fate or order was put into a situation that became out of control from one means or another and he/she reacted to the greater needs of those around him/her by doing what was called for in the protection and care of those around this hero without thought or consideration to their own safety or life. Reaction to the specific need creates the hero. That hero can even be an animal if that animal was brought up to take care of a specific person or group and the need was presented. (That is why many of us have animals around us, because we have tended to rely on them for certain protections and warnings.) Even the canaries of the old mining operations were hero's by definition because they were the first ones dead when the air turned gaseous. And dogs and cats are warning systems in our homes, ie., hero's in that that they lay their lives on the line for us each and every day and nite when we are asleep, offering us their protective noses, eyes and ears, for our safety and care, with little in return in many cases but a loving pat on the head and a meal.
