I was totally blown away to discover last week that the textbooks in our elementary schools have re-written the Pilgrim first Thanksgiving into a celebration of thanks to the INDIANS. The historical records make it clear the feast was to celebrate survival and the Pilgrims - being the religious people they were - Gave thanks to God for Divine Providence and Protection.
It was not a feast of friendship between Pilgrim and Indian. The Pilgrims defiled graves of Indians and dug of hidden food stores. They fought and stole from each other. When the local tribe was all but wiped out by small pox, the Pilgrims gave thanks to God.
The proclamations of the first congress and Washington concerning thanksgiving were filled with "God language". Even Lincoln when he established Thanksgiving as a national holiday made it clear the nation was to THANK GOD.
So it really ticks me off that the TEXTBOOK writers and the "Educationcrats" are taking God not only out of THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES but out of Thanksgiving!
Okay - I know this is political - please just accept it as sounding off -- but as writers we should be concerned that history is being falsified.

Perry - The accurate story of the original thanksgiving at Plymouth is easy to obtain, because William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth colony, kept a laborious diary which anyone can consult...particularly these days with Google, et al. The first year was an experiment into socialism, and was an utter failure. The crops were not bountiful, they were a disaster. They were, indeed, rescued by the Indians, and repaid them in succeeding years by trading with them generously (after they abandoned the socialistic colony for a free market). Of course they thanked God. They thanked God that they were alive, unlike the other half of their group.

In elementary school in the 70's, we were always taught that the Indians "helped" the Pilgrims and at the time of harvest, they were invited to the Thanksgiving feast as thanks for their help.
