Anyone watch this morning's Today Show? This fellow Jeb Corliss is flying through air with a suit similar to the design of a flying squirrel. For every 3 feet forward, he drops a foot, and he said he's flying at about 110 mph. According to this morning's segment, he leaves an airplane at 14,000 feet. At 2500, he opens a small shoot. His ultimate goal is to land in the squirrel suit, but there can be no mistakes. He and partners have designs for a special runway when he tries for the first time to land.

I first read about him a couple of months ago, and then saw a segment on some TV show where he was flying under the Christ statue in Argentina (?). It's all pretty neat in my opinion and I hope he accomplishes the landing. He's been an intrepid BASE jumper for years, but this will really be something if he's successful.

I saw it and was very impressed. He has studied and perfected and done a lot of practicing. I hope he finally gets to do the whole thing. He wants to get it right so that people all over can just put on a squirrel suit like his and someday be able to fly, maybe with a little jet pack on their back, which would be really neat. Man flying without the aid of a plane, the ultimate dream of Michelangelo. I wish that I could do something like that, my brother and I really tried when we were small to put something like that together, but we never could get out of the jumping off of the roof phase. My brother was a mechanical genius and was building and making engines that work when we were about 10 years old, he built gas engines for go carts, bikes and radios and all sorts of things, but couldn't quite figure out how to put one on his back to fly.

I saw his preflight films yesterday on the Today Show as well as today's segment, and they showed him going off of the mountains somewhere in South America. And a few places in other areas. He is a very remarkable young man, I hope he gets his dream to come true.

See Frank, we do have things in common, and I am not really a she-devil all the time.

Frank, forgive me for not being absolutely precise in my post above. I wrote that "He wants to get it right so that people all over can just put on a squirrel suit like his and someday be able to fly, maybe with a little jet pack on their back, which would be really neat." and I guessed that he said that as it was discussed later on in the show or maybe even later in the 4th hour, that something like that might be possible, however, I attributed it to him as having stated that and evidently that was not the case, as he did not state those words. So, I stand corrected on the phrase " maybe with a little jet pack on their back, " ...... since we are no longer allowed to let our own thoughts or images project into anything that comes from anywhere else.

Claudia, you missed my inadvertent homophone mix-up�'shoot' instead of 'chute.' Although maybe someday we all will be able to sprout new shoots from our arms and legs, and the top of our heads. Anyway, you could have AH-HAed me, but you missed your chance.

Frank, you must learn to adamantly defend your word faux pas. In posting a synopsis of TBF on another writing forum once, I accidentally wrote "in a soul-bearing scene" (guess I must have been hitting the bottle that day!) and another member pointed out that it should have been "soul-baring". I said, "Well, how do you know Wade didn't go into the shed carrying his soul in his pocket?" I thought she'd know I was only kidding, but she actually apologized for making an incorrect assumption!

That's funny, Joyce!

My best goof-up goes back to a time soon after I'd started selling some of my freelance material. I lived in a rural area and wrote on whatever I could that might make me a few extra bucks. It was spring-early summer and the phlox were out all along the roadsides. I took some nice pix of them and wrote a short puff piece to go along, then sent it off to some small pub that printed the same for about a half-cent per hundred words, or something like that. Anyway, it was rejected. A month or so later, it dawned on me just out of nowhere that throughout the manuscript I'd spelled the name of the flower as "flox."
