With this season's NCAA Basketball Tournament under way, I thought we might have some fun as writers. Too many schools, long ago, adopted the same nickname for their teams. In this year's tournament are Kentucky, Arizona, and Villanova. All three are the Wildcats. Since Kentucky has won 7 National Championships and more games than any other school, I think they should be allowed to keep theirs. Maybe Villanova could change to the Novas, a contemporary term that offers positive connotation. Also in the tournament are Butler, Georgia, and Mississippi State. Each of these is known as the Bulldogs. Maybe we could persuade Georgia to call themselves Genomes, or perhaps that would fit better at an Ivy League university.

Some schools have great names. Who would even think about getting rid of "Crimson Tide," although I do wonder what their mascot looks like.

Okay, it's over to the rest of you for some fancy verbal invention.

Well, I'd tend to go with the obvious: Villanova Villains, Georgia Peaches, Mississippi Klansmen.

And the mascot for the University of Alabama is Big Al the elephant. UA is officially the Red Elephants, hence the Crimson part of the Tide.

My alma mater is the University of California at Irvine. It was a brand new eight building campus in 1966 and there were no varsity sports. The student body (we were mostly geeks with slide rules and pocket protectors and there were only 500 of us) as a joke voted to call ourselves the Anteaters. We also voted to ban fraternities and sororities. Today UCI is one of the biggest campuses in the UC system with lots of varsity sports and they are stuck with the name we gave them. It's been a lot of years and I'm not sure who came up with the name, but I strongly suspect it was my first wife, Lynda (we were both barefoot when we were married by a man who claimed to be a minister on the Commons), or one of her artist friends. I have not been back to Irvine since I graduated despite the fact that I live less than 30 miles away. My views haven't changed much but my hair is definitely longer.

Well, thr Delaware teams are called the Fighting Red Hens...sort of the reverse of the womens teams called The Ladies whatever. I might challenge the "ladies" in general. But the Lady Bulls? Or Billies (goats)?

IN north Carolina when someone says "Carolina" you think of Chapel Hill's UNC. But in South Carolina you hear "Carolina" you think "Gamecocks of USC". If someone says "USC" you aren't thinking "University of Southern California". If you are from someplace other than the Carolinas you can get into real trouble not knowing one "Carolina" or "USC" from the other.
