The Air National Guard has a large base (It used to be Selfridge AFB) about 120 miles south of where I live and their pilots do most of their training exercises over the lake in front of my house. They're usually pretty high in the air but every once in a while, I'll feel a sonic boom that threatens to brake every window in my house. Yesterday was one of those days. And they're not letting up this morning. There has been a steady rumble up there since about 8:00AM.

On clear days you can see them practicing dog-fighting techniques in mock air battles. They must mark their hits with parachute flares because sometimes there are several of them floating down through the clouds.

I've been out in the lake on a boat and had the pilots line up on me to practice low-level strafing runs. I sure hope they don't have live ammo aboard. Some days it's a real air show and they almost never take a day off. They fly everything out of that base including the big mid-air refueling tankers. If the weather gets real bad, they just fly a little higher.

Gotta wonder what their daily fuel bill is...

whatever their daily fuel bill is, we gotta pay it with a certain contentment in our hearts because we know that they will be able to take all that training and use it when the time comes and it is needed. We have Fallon Naval Air Base just 75 miles away and Stead National Guard just over the hill from from here and they both fly-practice over my head all the time here. I love to see it and feel a lot safer in my heart because I know that they are there. I never think of the cost of that fuel........ I think of the safety of knowing that they are there. And today, with our political climate, it is growing ever closer to a time when that protection will be needed on and in our own country. I want them ready at a moments notice.

The valley I live in used to be a straffing run target area during WWII and Korea Conflict times. There are still findings of live ammo in back yards sometimes.
