Little movie:

Quite fun to see these chairs in action when you visit a library, but I'm afraid it might get a bit annoying being followed by a chair all the time. And how will you explain it to your shrink?

That was too cool, Harry. Had to show it to my daughter, the library page.

The only thing that bothers me about it is that the chair seemed rather sad when it wasn't allowed to go outside with the man it followed. Heartbreaking!

An abrupt end to an impossible, and by society unaccepted love between a chair and a man.

There must me a book in all this...

Let's call it "Seats Afire". Can we have them get married?

Back to the video, why would one need to sit in the aisle to browse? Wouldn't the aisles get congested?

Bill:
"why would one need to sit in the aisle to browse?"

Perhaps when reading heavy literature, like "Heavy Metal Guitar Licks" or "The Nothing" by Lodevick Leadbelly.

"Wouldn't the aisles get congested?"
It is a library Bill!

I would think it would be useful for people who are bothered by standing for extended periods and allow people who are otherwise dependent on wheelchairs or motorized scooters to be a little more mobile.

I bring my own wheelchair. Our local library does a good job of accommodating disabled people.

It's a classic case of an idea without a cause. Who needs it? Nobody! Every library I've ever been in has chairs AND tables so you have a place to set several books as you pursue your research.

In this country, and I assume in most countries, libraries are funded by our tax dollars. If my local library started wasting money like this, I'd be investigating the inventor to see which local politician was his brother-in-law.

When the LASER was invented nobody knew what to do with it, now they are everywhere.

Instead of a seat you could use the technology to make an IV-drip out of it like somebody mentioned. As we all get older that might come in handy. Certainly when people with Alzheimer need an IV.

And much more tax dollars are wasted on much worse ideas Dennis.

So that makes it ok?

Back about 48 years ago we had a driverless vehicle in our GM auto manufacturing plant. It was called "The Prontow" and it was like a little car that pulled carts full of assembly parts from one work station to another. It was programed to follow a wire that was imbedded in the floor. The cart stopped at pre-programmed "unload" stations so that assemblers could get the parts that they needed. It had super sensitive proximity switches all over it so that if encountered something it didn't recognize (like a pedestrian) it would stop and wait for further direction.

It was far more sophisticated (and useful) than a chair following a credit card around a library. And that was a half a century ago.

My God! We still didn't have electric light back then...

when I worked at Hughes Aircraft Co at the IR&D labs in Malibu, we had a robotic dog that would pick up papers and forms and reports of all types at the various offices around the labs. It was programmed by a sort of inner box with a transformer, that we would use to send it to other locations. It stopped and moved around obstacles and things that were intentionally put in its way. It was a great little dog...... that was back in 1975-76.

In '75 we did have electric light. The whole town came to see this miracle...
