Sorry, I'm in a silly mood again.

This shop congratulates the 10000th shoplifter.
Personally I think this is much worse than calling the police...

Movie!

She threw away the flowers and the party hat, but she kept the cake as she ran out the door. Please translate the sign on the door at the end of the video. The people who produced the film blurred out her face. In the United States law enforcement officers working with the producers would have enhanced the image so as to receive help from the public in identifying the perpetrator and bringing her to justice.

Fred:

“Please translate the sign on the door at the end of the video.”

The sign says that shoplifters will always be reported to the police. They wrote the word ‘almost’ before ‘always.’

“In the United States law enforcement officers working with the producers would have enhanced the image so as to receive help from the public in identifying the perpetrator and bringing her to justice.”

Fred, if you can put a party hat on a thief and hand her a cake it will be also very easy to hand her over to the police like they usually do when they apprehend a thief.
They chose not to, but instead threw a little party that drew quite a bit of attention to her. I’m pretty sure that it was worse for her than the police. The police would have quietly taken her along and few people would have noticed. Perhaps the shame will do more good than any other punishment.

I just thought it was funny (it made me laugh quite loudly.) Sorry.
I also thought the library chairs were funny and did not expect to evoke a whole discussion about out-dated technology and wasting tax money. Sorry for that too…

Perhaps you are right about fundamental cultural differences after all?

Am I correct in assuming that she got away with whatever it was that she was shoplifting? Funny, yes. Effective, no.

I think they let her keep the stolen object.
When the camera and the manager arrive she claims: "I didn't do anything." The manager responses with a cynical: "Of-course you didn't do anything."
She would not try to make that claim if they had taken the stolen object from her.
The strongest indication is the alarm when she walks trough the gate.
The object she has stolen is no doubt much cheaper than the cake and the flowers and all that. So in short term the store loses more money this way.

"Effective" in my opinion would be that she would stop stealing. Being humiliated and exposed like that in public seems quite effective to me, like I said before.
The alarm proves to the people in the store that she was indeed a shoplifter, but I think they really didn't care about the stolen object, and I doubt it that the girl will have happy memories whenever she uses it.

Suppose that the stolen object was a battery operated vibrator. She could be enjoying it immensely. If they wanted to embarrass her, why didn't they show her face?

Even if it was a vibrator (I have never seen them at HEMA's,) I think she would always be reminded of that humiliating day. It is much worse when people you know recognize you as a shoplifter than people who don't know you at all.
I don't know why they didn't show her face, probably legal consequences when you drop somebodies face on the internet?

Thanks for the hot link to the video. At least the manager was thinking outside of the box - and it is comical. Since you were kind enough to explain the unique Dutch/European aspects, I'll quit analyzing it to death.

Oh, usually they simply report shoplifters to the police just like in the USA.
