Listening to the Beach Boys this afternoon sing "She's real fine, my 409," I got to thinking that, when I was a teenager, a lot of us often referred to hot cars by their engine displacement, which at the time was measured in cubic inches. So while my brother was in the service, I not only drove around his '57 Chevy Convertible, but I also spoke about the 283 under the hood. And when my Pappy bought a Chevy SuperSport in 1962, friends and I talked about the 327 that powered it. And a year or so later came the 409 that the Beach Boys commemorated in a hit song. What do kids do today when they talk of cars? Auto manufacturers switched describing their motors from cubic inches and number of cylinders to cubic centimeters and number of valves quite awhile ago. Do teens still reference hot cars by engine displacement? FREE Short Stories by F.E. Mazur at femazur.com. Give them a try and drop me a line. SPINE THE BUCKSELLER |

they do if you live in a state like Nevada where we have Hot August Nights every year, Frank. Hot August Nights is a celebration that lasts for about 10 days and nights and is all about the Muscle cars and every car that was made before 1966. And the music and the food and dancing and everything else that went along with the time, the drag racing, the stereos, the poodle skirts and ponytails, the boys with the slick pomade hair and the jive talk. They have an auto auction that is nationally and internationally attended and a parade this year that had 5000 cars in it. Come attend it sometime, it is really great and there are about a hundred things to do each day and night with lots of concerts thrown in for good measure. But if you do come to Hot August Nights you had best book your rooms now or really quickly, as the whole town books out before Sept 1 for the next year, each year. Hot August Nights happens the first week of August every year. The lingo isn't the same with the newer cars, like it was back when, mostly because the thrill isn't the same anymore as all cars have sorta become much the same and lost that magic hrumph or sound when revved up. But the people that own those cars now really build them up to more than they were when they were new, paint and body and interior, engines spitting fire, and the pipes and stereos more than bring it all back, just like when you were in school. My son (the Mustang Cobra owner) and his friends do, but they love the classic muscle cars. Hence the presence of them in TRUE BLUE FOREVER. This is the review my son wrote for TBF that's posted at Amazon.com: A big block in a world full of Hondas - by FordPower351 A friend of mine was telling me about this book they were reading and they mentioned that one of the characters drove a Boss 429. Well since they only made about 1200 of these Mustangs, I immediately became skeptical, thinking that the author was just using these rare, top of the line vehicles like they were store brand cereal. So I read the book convinced that it would reek of stale overused stereotypes like the ones in every other story. Well it turned out to be a huge girly love story like I had expected. But what I didn't expect, and don't let anyone know this(especially not the Chevy guys), but I loved it. I read it all in one night, a night that was supposed to yield a rebuilt carburetor. But my Holley carb had to wait for Jeana and Mickey and Billie Joe, and I don't regret it one bit. The story line was excellent and constantly had me wanting to read more of it. My wife must have thought I was under the car with another woman with all the laughing I was doing out in my garage, because she came out to see what was "so freakin hilarious," as she put it. Well she read it the night after I finished and absolutely LOVED it. Although she did keep asking me why there was so much grease on the pages. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great story, not just a love story, but a lot more. This was one of the best books I have read in a long time, and I hope there is a second book on the way? I did have one problem with it, however. I felt that Mickey was spending way too much time with Jeana and not enough time with his Ford. But I guess Jeana was just that one special girl we all have. And he really didn't need that much time to work on his Mustang anyway, those Fords run forever you know! Okay, so what if he didn't have either a wife or a garage? His mama still loved this review! ~Joyce Sterling Scarbrough True Blue Forever ISBN 0-9722385-9-X Different Roads ISBN 0-9722385-3-0 Authors Ink Books http://www.authorsinkbooks.com Read the first chapters: http://www.authorsden.com/joycelscarbrough1 Waste time on Joyce's Blog: http://joycescarbrough.blogspot.com Watch the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kztz5e3XZeo |
