Well, I received an honor tonight that goes above and beyond sales rankings and royalties.

I had a kid sign up at UAA and ask if anyone could answer some questions that he has about getting published. He also mentioned that it's part of a high school project. Well, I wrote him directly and said that I would be happy to help in any way that I could. (you all know me...it's the way I am)

Anyway, this kid asks me if I would be willing to mentor him through the assignment. Wow! What a rush! To have a kid ask me to guide him through an assignment is something that I never expected would happen. It even rises above the non-expectation of getting published and having people like my work!

I guess this is what they mean when they say "no matter how good or bad you are, there ARE rewards to be reaped".

Kevin........

Sounds like you've arrived. When you can receive those intangible awards, things like genuine respect and admiration, it adds a dimension to your success that can't be defined by dollars. If you ever listen to the words of some of the mega-buck performers, they'll tell you that it's not about the money, it's about the applause.

Congratulations.

Kevin, that is way, way too cool, and it is an honor. High school kids don't give their trust easily.

I had a similar experience yesterday. I am raising my second family, and throughout the first round of teen-age years, I routinely sheltered my teens' homeless teen-age friends. (It's really odd to have some 30 something woman or man, with kids of their own, stop by and call you MOM, which is what they all callled me and still do now that their grown.)

Well, I am going through it again, even though my teen won't technically be a teen for a couple of more weeks. But, she has this friend whose mom is gone all the time, and who is supposed to be "home-schooled" except the mom isn't doing it. The teen's been hanging around here a lot, like from Thursday nights to Sunday nights, ususally.

She is an exceptionally bright girl, loves to read and write, and all that potential is being wasted by a mom who could care less. We had a talk last week-end about school, talents, potential, etc. Didn't think she was listening, but I guess she was. Told me yesterday that she is going back to school, starting this coming Monday. Too cool. Made me feel, probably, a lot like the way you are feeling right now.

I don't think there is any better legacy that we can leave in this world than these types of things, making a difference for the better in a young person's life.

Kevin,
That is wonderful!! I might get stoned for this, but I have always felt that writing is Not About the Money. Touching people with a story you tell, or mentoring someone with the knowledge that you have acquired is a gift that money cannot buy. The self-respect I have gained from being published is a reward that I had not anticipated. Enjoy the high Kevin, you deserve it.

okay,okay...I admit, I would love to see a big fat royalty check, but that is not why I write.

Kathy

This must be our week! Wednesday I spoke four times at my daughter's high school to the creative writing classes. The teacher asked me to come in and tell my story about how I got the ideas to write, and then a little bit about the publishing experience in general.

Then there was a question and answer time. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If nothing else, I was able to encourage them to learn all they can, attend college immediately after high school, and keep a journal as well as their early writings. :)

Thanx for sharing Kevin. To me, it's quite an honor just to be asked for help/advice. I wish I'd had someone to guide me. I just sort of stumbled into everything with my eyes closed. Although they're wide-open now, it's been a hard journey at times.

Live and learn!

Vickie, that's too cool. I also wish I had had someone to ask for help and advice, maybe I wouldn't have made all the mistakes I made. But then again, knowing how stubborn, pig-headed, and rebellious I am, I probably would of done what I did anyway.
